DeviantART is proud to announce our Premium Content Platform — providing the ability for content creators to become sellers and generate real earnings by making digital files of their high-quality work available for download. Sellers are able to set their own prices while retaining 80% of all revenue earned, and buyers are able to quickly get the things they want with the satisfaction of supporting the artists they love.
Site Update: Staff Retreat, .Art, deviantMEETsIn this week's Site Update, we don't have any publicly visible changes, as our Devious Technology (dT), Product, and Product Marketing teams are all still at a staff retreat!
At the beginning of the week, the dT team worked on improving our internal development tools to increase efficiency. Then, on Wednesday, we let any staff members at the retreat pitch fun and exciting ideas for deviantART features that could be built in two days. After each feature idea was pitched, everyone from dT chose which projects they'd like to work on. Throughout the year, engineers primarily work on projects that are assigned to them, so sometimes it's important to turn the tables and let them choose projects in which they're most passionate and excited about.
The purpose of these two-day "hackathons" is to build and demonstrate a proofs of con

Group Journal Comment Messages for Admins
Over the past few months, many members have been asking to bring back the feature where Group admins receive Message Center notifications when members comment on their Groups' journals. This week, we brought back this functionality and messages will now be appearing for all new comments.
Group journal messages will appear for all users who have administrative powers over that Group's journal. For example, if the "Contributors" admin class is set to 'Can

We've added two more share buttons to deviation pages! This was a popular request, both in comments from members here on deviantART as well as on deviantART's Google+ Page, and so we've be adding buttons that allow you to share on Google+ and Pinterest, in addition to the share tools that are already in place.

Username Changes Now Available
DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give yo

More Updates to the New Thumbnails Preview
Several weeks ago, we released a sneak peek of deviantART's new thumbnails. We've been making changes based on community responses, and today we've implemented a few more. In this updated version, the font, spacing, and colors of the text under the thumbs have been adjusted. Also, several members had concerns about the "frames" that were put around thumbs that were either extra tall, extra wide, or small images (such as emoticons and avatars). We've adjusted the visual display of these frames to make them less distracti

Coming Soon: New Sta.sh Submit
Beta testers are currently trying out the new submission process for Sta.sh, deviantART's upload and publishing platform. This new version includes a simplified and tidier interface that makes it easier to understand and use. The feedback on this new process has been very positive, so we will be rolling it out to all members early next week. 10 Tips for Tutorial Writing Success!10 things to consider when writing a tutorial
Are you interested in trying our Official Photomanipulation Tutorial Challenge but unsure of where to begin? Look no further! Here are some tips about creating a tutorial that is easy for you to write and easy for us to understand. We hope these pointers will be useful to you; as always, feel free to leave questions or comments.
1. Sit down and really think about what you are good at doing
What do people compliment you about most frequently? What are you most proud of in your manipulations so far? It could be anything, from the way you select and cut out stock to the way you make your colors pop. Start from your strength, something you can talk about with ease.
2. Take the pressure off!
No matter how "good" someone is at photomanipulation already, they still have something interesting to le

The 365 Photography Challenge - How to Stick at itBefore I start with this article, a little disclaimer. I just finished the 365 photography challenge - known as a 'photo a day' but I blogged and took more than one photo on most days, so it was that little bit more challenging. So I'm feeling pretty smug right now, that I achieved it. But I am by no means toting myself as an expert. This is just my humble advice on how to keep going when it does nothing but rain, or when you feel like giving up.
Before 2012, some weeks would pass when I wouldn't even pick up the camera, let alone think about shots, or how to compose one. Photography still excited me, but I was lacking inspiration. So on the 2nd of January last year I decided to throw everything up in the air, and let go. That is to say, I stopped being precious about the camera (because you can't when you have to take a photo a day) and I forced myself to take rubbish shots, as well as half decent ones.
Start as you mean to go. Don't over-set yoursel
PE - SciFaiku Poetry FormWhat on earth is SciFaiku?
SciFaiku (science fiction haiku) is a minimalist science fiction poetry form similar to traditional haiku. According to Wikipedia (grain of salt guys), the earliest publication of SciFaiku was likely in 1962. It became known officially as SciFaiku in 1995 when the SciFaiku Manifesto was posted up by Tom Brink. (At the time of finalizing this article, the website is down; however, I have seen it go down and come back up before, so it's worth saving. They may be having server issues.)
How does one write SciFaiku?
SciFaiku is written like traditional contemporary haiku, and as such, SciFaiku seeks a sense of immediacy. A capture of a moment. A directness of expression, avoiding abstractions. A good SciFaiku does not make any judgments. Conveying a feeling of immediacy is important. Here's an example:
Digging up an ancient city,
finding the print
PE: The power of contextA picture is indeed "worth a thousand words", a complex idea can be conveyed with a single still image. This quote also characterizes one of the main goals of visualizations, namely making it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly. In our perception of artworks we see every day, some get closer to our hearts than others. Imagine a painting, strong and powerful, technique showing an experienced, steady hand, needing nothing but a pair of eyes to enter one's sensitive soul. Are you satisfied with what you see? I wouldn't count on that, but I would be quite sure that after a while your head fills with numerous questions.
On the contrary, your favorite artist publishes their recent work and you, as always, immediately love it. If, however, you would allow your mind a little exercise, you could clearly see that if this work was shown to you at random, under different circumstances and you would not know the author, hardly would it catch your interest for a second.
Talty's Artisan Crafts DD GuidelinesHello everyone! Remember to send me and maytel lots of Artisan Crafts DD suggestions, we love them! ^^ Artisan Crafts week at projecteducate is quickly approaching, so if you have any suggestions or things that you would like to see, let us know!
Here's my guidelines for suggesting DDs to me, if I ever reject your submission please don't be discouraged and keep sending me more! It's impossible to accept all suggestions, specially when I already have enough suggestions for one area. Also don't forget that these are guidelines, not rules.
If you don't know how to suggest a DD check out Suggesting DDs For Dummies by Thiefoworld.
Last update: January 24th
I can only feature submission that are part of the Artisan Crafts gallery and Traditional Art > Sculpture.
Musical Art Challenge1. Set your favorite music playlist on random.
2. Pick art about what you're listening to, what emotions you feel.
3. Pick only while song is playing.
4. Feature in a journal!
5. Tag 5 people once done to do the same.
This was so much fun to make! If you're not tagged, feel free to do this as well - it's a great excuse to browse and feature some cool art in a new way and to really experience the music as well.

:iconayame-kenoshi: Some thoughts from Toby (Ayame-Kenoshi)
"If you could have any super power, what would it be?" I think it's a question we all have to answer at some point. We're innately curious about the unknown and enjoy diving into the depths of imagination. We know it's not possible, but we can't shake the question of, "What if?"
I don't think my answer has changed since I was asked as a child. I never saw much need for invisibility. I don't think I would enjoy being a mind reader. And sure, shooting laser beams out of my hands would be fun, but there's something that I've always been drawn to more.
I would like to fly.
To me, flight represents freedom. It's the ability to travel around without borders, coming and going as you please. I initially associate it with being closer to nature, as well, somethin

Project Educate: Composition BasicsThe action of putting things together; formation or construction.
The term composition simply means 'putting together' and is applied to all forms of art. In this respect, composition is all about the placement, arrangement or organisation of the individual elements within a photo. The composition of a photograph is what catches the viewer's attention and is what makes the image pleasing to the eye. By practicing and developing basic composition techniques, you can produce pieces of work which can recreate the impact of the original scene.
Some tips for developing composition skills are;
Look around using the viewfinder every time you take a picture.Look at each element and how it impacts the overall composition.Become familiar with your camera. Learn how it works, play around with settings and really get to know how each setting changes the overall image.Experiment and practice. Experiment and practice.
