Beta Test: New Thumbnail Grid

Fri Sep 18, 2015, 11:28 AM by danlev:icondanlev:

In June, we announced an upcoming thumbnail grid. Today, we’re releasing the thumbnail grid and new thumb sizes to Beta Testers and we need your keen eyes! :sherlock:

Highlights of the new thumbnails include:

  • Bigger thumbnails and a new grid system allows more emphasis to be placed on art.

  • The old grid leaves uneven or irregular gaps between images, while our new grid maximizes screen space to create a wall of beautifully displayed deviations.

  • The new thumbnail grid is optimized for bandwidth. Images will use slightly more bandwidth, but less bandwidth used across multiple pages.

  • Thumbnails are optimized for retina and high-resolution screens.

  • We put special care into the look of non-standard image types, such as literature, pixel art, and emoticons ensure that kinds of art are featured respectfully and beautifully.

Please note: During this test, the new thumbnails will only be displayed on search and browse pages.

What to know:

Who has access to the new thumbnail grid?

Beta Testers only.

Will the new thumbnail grid be on all pages?

Eventually, yes. However, during this test, the new grid is only available on browse pages, search pages, and tag pages on the desktop site. The new thumbnail grid is not currently testable on the mobile site, however, it will be once it launches.

What happened to being able to drag-and-drop thumbnails into my favourites?

While the ability to drag and drop thumbnails into your favourites isn't available in the new thumbnail grid beta test, we're working on a new solution that'll let you easily add deviations to your favourites. We'll be sharing more details about this soon.

How can I help test the new thumbnail grid?

Use it!  Tell us what you like and what you don’t.  Do you enjoy the way different deviation types are presented as thumbnails?  Leave a comment on this journal.  Found a bug?  We want to know.

What types of bugs should I look for?

  • Loading issues

  • Cases of specific deviations not displaying properly

  • Alignment and display issues

How do I provide feedback or report a bug?

General feedback can be left in the comments of this article.  If you run into bugs, submit them to the bug tracker under the New Thumbnail Grid project and we'll work to get everything fixed as soon as we can. :bug:

Please remember that this is a beta test and you may run into bugs. We appreciate your help and feedback on this project and we're excited to share it with the rest of the community! :)

If the glitch in the search box (automatic scrolling up and it being a hassle to get new images) is caused by this beta feature, then it needs fixing.
Either way, it needs fixing.

I really like it, especially the endless scrolling feature. I would like if there were a "back to top" button, though. I also love the favourite feature when I hover over an image. I would like to suggest adding a way to choose where to send it if a user has collections. No bugs so far.

Very lovely layout and design though some thumbnails fail to load for me. I'm not sure if it's my internet or a bug. Nonetheless, I love the new layout so far!

It's okay with me! I love the layout. It gives it that "comfort" feeling. No bugs so far~

I do indeed like the endless scrolling feature. Whenever i'm bored I can just keep scrolling and scrolling without ever moving or clicking the mouse lol
However, would like to suggest adding a "back to top" button in case someone's scrolled waaaay to far in addition to having the "drag to favorite" feature. I really do like that as it makes it easier to get back to scrolling rather than clicking on the artwork and going back to start scrolling from the beginning.

I understand that you guys would like to drop out the drag and drop feature of favourites.

No, I personally thing thats not the greatest idea but suggesting that if you were to hover over the picture maybe a star would apppear so you can add it easily. But you'd want to incorporate an ability to dump it in your other favourites as well which is gonna be fun for you guys to figure out. :))

Seems to me there might be an issue right now, all the thumbs seem to be left justified which leaves large gaps on the right of the screen.  Also I note that when you leave the main page and view an enlarged image you used to be able to use an ALL button top right which would then take you back to the place in the grid you were, this seems to have vanished and now you must return to the home page and start at the top of the grid and scroll back down.

I really love how it's just art until you hover. I feel like that's what a true gallery should be- just art. Then if you're interested, you can get more info on that art. It's one thing I loved so much more about Anipan when it was around, and I'm really glad to see it here.

I feel like the thumbs could stand to be a little closer to eachother, but it's not a huge deal.
Edit* I definitely don't want it gapless though... that would look dreadful.

Curious, though... is there an expected time frame for moving forward with this? Will it beta test in galleries and favorites before going full site? Or when the front page tests are over, is it just going to go full site? Should we expect it before the end of the year? I'm really excited to see this in my gallery and favorites.

The grid looks nice, but it feels a bit time consuming to hover over just to check the artist's name.
Also, I don't know if this is a bug or not, but some deviations keep repeating itself:

I absolutely love the new thumbnail grid -- it's a nice compromise between the old DA grid and the compressed view on Artstation.  I can't wait to see how my gallery looks when it is introduced fully!

I don't know if these bugs have been reported yet, but here is what I've found from using the new layout:

- If you do a search and click on [Popular 8 Hours] or a similar button, it will default to [Popular All Time] and all other options save for [Newest] will become unavailable
- If you click on [Newest], the page will say that it's listing 48 images but only 24 will be displayed. This means that half of the available thumbnails are being skipped. :disbelief:
A perfect example is a search for the words genie and female - [Popular All Time] will show all 48 just fine (if you still have SHOW 48 selected - I switched back to SHOW 24 and haven't been able to switch back yet) but [Newest] will still show 24 per page.
Another example is a search for "infinite maze" - [Popular All Time] shows all 47 images while [Newest] only shows 24 and no option to [Show More].
- At one point, [Popular All Time] seemed to be missing thumbnails from the second page, onward. This seems to have been fixed, however. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm sure that other bugs will be found but the first two are ones that I hope will be fixed as soon as possible. It would be a shame to miss a lot of talented artists' works. :aww:

Thank you for reading, in any event.

A question: I do have the same bugs as others has reported, and in the place we can report a bug, it says we can vote on other reports if they are about the same bug we want to report. The question is; How do I vote on those reports? There are no links to do so. :)

Hm, I don't know if anyone explained to you yet but I do it this way:
1. Go to Report a bug and choose the project that you wanna report a bug from:

Current Projects by mtsworld

2. There's a part called "How do I provide feedback or report a bug?"

How do I provide feedback or report a bug by mtsworld

3. Go to "Recently Reported issues" and choose the one that you found that already has been reported:

Recently Reported issues by mtsworld

4. Then you just have to click on the +1 button.

Vote by mtsworld

And that's it, I think DGSAUGDHSLJK

Thanks. :)

Just that then I got to the "Recently Reported Issues", I were not able to choose the one I wanted to report no matter there on it I clicked. And thus I did not get to there the +1 button is.

So I guess there is another bug there; Not everyone are able to vote. :p

Things I like: The size of the images on display.

Things I don't like: The endless scrolling which slows down loading time.

Also some of the images tend to repeat.

When i have the new thumbnail grid activated i can not drag and drop a deviation into a favorites folder like before. (on computer browser btw)
It is a very handy feature that should be kept in my opinion

The endless scrolling is probably the only issue I have with this system. It makes the image loading suuuuper slow compared to the older method.

The more you scroll down it'll just become a turtle.

Maybe you can do pages to fix this issue. Or something else. But yeah, the page weight is a bit heavy. Feels really slow. & the images don't load as quickly as they  used to.

I totally agree.  The new display lacks so much that the old display had (titles etc always on view, categories accessible via hover) - it only needed the artist permanently displayed, as in favourites and groups, to be perfect.  I do not have problems with notifications and notes but search has been all messed up since a few days before this beta-test was launched, and has only got worse, whether or not I check the beta-test box!
As you say, please, please, revert to the old system!

For the love of god, let us view what category the pieces belong to when we hover over them. Just display "in [Category]" right next to the name of the artwork.

I like the new layout a lot, it looks very clean and the focus is on the artworks. I'm not entirely sure about journals, though. While I generally like background images, I often feel they are distracting from the preview text. I noticed that I started reading more journals that didn't have a background image.

Oh gods no, gapless? I don't want to browse through an art collage to find a piece of art that I like.

To elaborate on what I said before, have different settings like this:

Spacing:

Gapless
Small
Medium
Large

Then everyone is happy. Why can't customization be a thing?

Also, yes, I hate being unable to drag and drop thumbnails as well. It made collecting art more fun. :(

I will only be happy when things are back where they used to be, with information (titles, etc.) permanently displayed with the opportunity to see categories.  One improvement that could be made would be to add the artist's username under the title, as in Groups and Favourites.  For me the thumbnail display is a search tool, I do not expect it to be the way to experience the art.
Yes, you could suit everyone if you could customise to your own preference, but this would make a lot more for dA to keep working correctly!

Suggestion: I'd like to see Author Tags on the literature again. I found it handy for recognizing a specific author and it added a nice touch to the otherwise dull thumbnail, also the sample scroll was nice for getting an idea what was written beyond the first few lines. perhaps you could allow just a few more lines, but not too many, lit' gets too few clicks as it is.

Also, I see no point in leaving large spaces between images, just get it over with and make them even bigger (or totally space-less) since thats basically the point of the whole upgrade.

Bug: I'm noticing a lag as I scroll down the page. sure it all loads fast, but there is a definite lack of smooth scrolling, it has a little 'skip' every page length or so.  its not horrable but it is noticeable.

Eh, sorry, but I just don't like it at all, like I thought I wouldn't.

I love it on my phone, because there's only room for 4 images, but seeing 10 images at once on my computer close together makes it far too busy for me personally.

Would love it if there was an option to switch back implemented.

Edit: Or, options for how much space between thumbnails is shown would work too.

But as someone who is always looking through the Pixel Artoworks I was wondering if for the smaller one (icons for example) it is possible to make the height of the grid smaller ? Or eventually make it transparent ?

A little undecided about how the wider thumbs are much more prominent, but with the alternatives, I think it works pretty okay.  Definitely liking how it's handling taller thumbs.

Any chance for a thumbnail uploader where people can choose the crop?  Some are cropping awkward and unattractively.

LOVE IT. It's got a much lighter feeling to it than the heavy block blue of the previous thumbnail grid. And I much prefer the aesthetic of images neatly fitted together. I'm also enjoying the uniform of the new journal/ literature thumbnails. Makes the samples/ titles easier to read. Please keep it!
Saw no bugs. Loaded smoothly. :'D
