When the Inception Comic Cover Art Contest launched, we asked you to design a cover for the comic prequel of Inception, The Big Under. And with the many, many quality entries we received, we could have covers for a whole series of comics!

The entries have been sorted and the judges have narrowed them down to 15 amazing semi-finalists. From these semi-finalists, the final three winners will be selected by the writer and director of Inception, Christopher Nolan!

We give you... the 15 semi-finalist of the Inception Comic Cover Art Contest!

They should have called this contest design a promotional poster for the film. The entry that won doesn't give any idea about the story contained in the comic and I would have to say if I saw that cover at the comic book store I would have to pass.

is it because i changed the color of the text "the big under"? Because no where in the rules does it say i cant do that.

umm honestly, not much of a concept behind yours minus the pics of the actors,so it doesnt hold anything true compared to the concept of "Inception"

and a silhouette of a train does?

The silhouette of the train represents the train that is referenced within the movie. It's a reoccuring part of the story and plot:

"Mal: I'll tell you a riddle. You're waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don't know for sure. But it doesn't matter. How can it not matter to you where the train will take you?
Cobb: Because you'll be together."

It's how Mal and Cobb woke up from limbo.
Have you seen the movie?

Your cover is good, it has good technical skills in it, but it lacks creativity and a relation to the movie other than the actors. The pictures that were chosen intertwine a lot of concepts from the movie in a creative fashion.

could have been a couple of things. the artist could of not provided proof of citizenship or age, or could have just not responded to the email asking for the proof.

The judges usually pick a list of runner-ups. There's almost always a couple of entries that are disqualified.

So... no offense to the other artists but a few of my absolute favorites, that if judged by anyone else had insta-win possibilities, aren't here... and I really don't understand how this judging happened.
Like everyone else I'm really floored at the fact that ~clayrodery's entry isn't up here. It's freaking amazing. It had some of the best technical skill and sheer awesomeness out of everything. I really, really suggest looking at it.

Though, I'm very happy that *Revolution-77's entry is here. He's pretty much got this handed to him... it's been my favorite since I saw it. <3

I can't help but say I'm a little more than disappointed at how this contest ended up, as is everyone I know, and I wish Chris Nolan could view the other entries. There was a handful of very strong examples and I only see one or two of them here.

How come this wasn't chosen?

Those are not inspiring, just typical american comics. I thought Inception will get something original for a cover.

That is an easy one ...it went against the rules. It didn't follow directions, and was missing the title of the comic for one thing and if you downloaded it ...it would be too small.

Both logo and size were correct, I changed both of these after I found out I didn't get the semifinalist spot not before, which is stated in the description. I was disqualified for an entirely different reason.

Yes, but, if you enter a contest you got to follow the rules, because if you don't your work will be overlooked. That is my reason behind why it didn't make it, which, means it's not really the judges fault on that one.

If you follow all the rules, and have someone win whom didn't ...you will be hear even more complaints than what is being heard about this one. And, it would be more than just an opinion, it would be grounded in fact.

Yes, but sometimes the rules are not written in a limpid way. So sometimes, it's not entirely fault of the one who read the rules.
I've also parcipiate in many contests, and I'd happen too see many of such situations.

I don't want to argue. I just want to tell what i think because, the movie was amazing, I am a fan, and I was somewhat down because I saw many of great entries dissapear because 'of not following the rules'.

Yes, it's sad, but ...them the break. I entered this contest myself, and I lost as well. Didn't follow the rules, but, I didn't want to go back and change my design because of such a thing. I didn't expect to win after that point, but, I know why so it's okay with me.

I can understand wanting the best piece to win, but, then again ..can it be called better ..if it won by breaking the rules in the first place. That would give it an unfair advantage over those that were limited by the rules.

Thus, as stand alone pieces they are great ...make sure you favorite and comment them. That way it's not a total lost for them.

Well, it's not like I think theyre bad. I can see the authors really tried their best. Just as always I ten to favor one especially.

It's still a shame you 'broke the rules', because they could organize this 'rules' better.

oh well, it's mostly their loss not ours.

I just looked through all the entries. Some of my favorites made it in to the final fifteen (#2 and #15). However, there were several better entries than some of the ones picked for the final that were completely ignored. To be honest, some of the finalists have no business being there considering better entries that were passed up. Not sure about the so called "judging panel" and what they were thinking, but I'm not impressed with their abilities. A lot of the finalists wouldn't have a snowflake's chance in Hell of seeing a commercial cover.

Really don't see how some of those in the finals made it in over some of the other submissions out there. I'm not impressed with all the choices (or the judging).

Nope, I don't know this wasn't nice thing to say. My opinion is that, not all the entries look good , nor they show any skill...Other artists should have made it. It was so much better art works left out there.

That is fine, and you are free to have that opinion. But please remember, that not everyone is going to see it your way, but if you want to make it up to those that didn't make it that you thought should have ...be sure to add them to your favorites and comment.

Just my opinion now, but, that would be your way of supporting them ...so that even if they didn't win they can see that their work was still appreciated.

I understand this, art is a subjective matter, but they are few basic things when you should follow when creating a good art...And I've noticed those things were not followed during the finale judgement of some of the final 15 entries.

If you understand art is subjective, then there is no basic that good art follows. It's beauty in the eye of the beholder, and in this case, you can't really say what is good or bad art.

Whether they follow your judgement of what good art is ...is neither here nor there, because it wasn't for your benefit that these pieces were created. In other words, leave your opinions as they are, and don't try to make them fact. Don't try to make this a case of you coming up with rules that don't really exist in art, because, it's a free subject.

The basic of good art has been trial and shattered so many times, that everyone who know anything about the subject understand that they are elementary subjects that all artist are suppose to graduate from ...sooner or later.

obviously some art rules exists, since they are competitions out there, isn't it? If they were not any art rules, how people with come to conclusion who wins or who not. My point was that, the judgement on those final 15 fifteen wasn't very professional , that's all IMO. And I never tried to make my opinion as it is a fact, as you stated above, nor I was looking something to benefit from. I don't think you really understand what I am talking about. It better leave it as it is.
