Natalia Poklonskaya, the attractive new attorney general of Crimea (Ukraine) has become the newest internet sensation after a video of her at a press conference went viral. Her looks gained her the attention of the internet, and artists — many of them on deviantART — began creating fan art of her.
"With many eyes turned to Ukraine, Poklonskaya’s face was plastered across international media, eventually reaching China and Japan, where she became an icon to many cartoonists and animators struck by her beauty"

Someone should draw her evil, cruel and dark soul in comparison to the innocent childlike beauty which is an empty shell to disguise her real sinister aim in life. To reply to imperialist pro russians: She may be bright or not - we will never know since all she is is Putin's puppet.
GuyChapMan Featured By Owner Jan 1, 2015
She helped save Crimea from war.

Crimea is the territory of Ukraine... Crimeans don't think so, but it's not the point. It's the principle that matters XD

To me people can draw what ever they please.. Other People drew obama in a "anime" style yet no one bitches about it.. To me it seems fine, she's a smart woman and she's very beautiful, and it's is not sexist at all..
AnnSanityOo Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
fucking really?
People now even started drawing a politician as an anime/hentai girl. And of course also as a pony, and probably in every sick perverted kind of fetish shit.
This is the most ridiculous shit I've heard in a very, very long time.

Gratulation Japan, you went fully retarded.
Saira-Dragon Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2014
not every one who draws anime style etc is from japan although ive seen some of the drawings when i was scrolling through stuff kinda disturbing in some ways but il just have to shrug it off

This is a personal opinion, so i'll phrase it as a question instead of stating it as an absolute.

Does anyone else believe that it is disrespectful to overly sexualize a public figure or fixate on her/him because of beauty regardless of merits or political agenda?

She's pretty, don't get me wrong. My knee jerk reaction to some of the fan art is that it's disrespectful.
Perhaps its a poor reaction, so i'd like another perspective.

She is a country's representative in a position of political power. Shouldn't her politics be more important?

I'm very passionate about the power, potential, and use of art. If your response would be long, please note me. I'd like to know what others are thinking.
Apps-boingo Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I do agree that some of the arts here indeed do give me a pause, but cartoons or caricatures have always been one of the fundamental ways of expressing politics. Though there's nothing here that relates to politics here but...
Well, once artists go crazy, there's no stopping them. She was just the unfortunate victim of the internet culture, but it's just art after all. Some of it might be toeing the line of decorum, but it's got more to do with the 'craze' rather than the person itself. It could just as well have been a model or a candy shopkeeper and it wouldn't have made a difference.
NuminiousNihil Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2014
Yea, but political cartoons are one thing. The intention is typically to parody the politics of the subject. They're made more humorous by distorting and adding absurd features. The politics of the target are still in the foreground.

I'm also not too sure about the "just art" stance. I think that because art is so ubiquitous, it's pretty easy to take it and it's influence for granted. From the art in a well designed ad, to the imagery we use in the stories we tell, I think that art is more powerful than we give it credit for. At the very least, it gives some insight into what the artist puts time into recreating and repeating on paper.

Supermodels are meant to be seen. It's the purpose of their profession. A working person like a candy shopkeeper is also not responsible for a representing pieces of public policy.

You know, I think i have more of a problem with what It says about our focus as tense as things seem to be over there.

It shouldn't be a struggle for her to get people to take her seriously. But should and is are often two completely different things.

Holy crap people get the heck over it. Artists found her pretty and were inspired to draw her in a cute anime style; once some did this others followed just to expand the meme. It's just a little joke. Nobody is denying she is not an overachiever reaching the position she is in due to brains but that doesn't mean its sad or creepy to draw a picture complimenting her beauty. She herself felt flattered and though it was funny as you cna see here:

Stop taking things so damn seriously.
Russia-Love Featured By Owner Jul 7, 2014
Agreed :( it's like when people start drawing someone important it's automatically sexist or disrespectful. I'm not sure what planet you came from but how is being drawn by talented artist disrespectful? I think she is drawn both because of her beauty and strength. It's just over the top. Even russia found it amusing... It confuses me why people even bitch about a person who isn't even from their country anyway. Would you be offended if Obama was being drawn? It already happened anyway and I never saw one person say it's sexist or disrespectful. Biased people..

I don't think that this is really the best way to show respect to someone who deserves it.

It's funny how she's now famous because of her beauty rather than her brains (that got her to that top notched position).
Owlicopter Featured By Owner Mar 27, 2014  Hobbyist Artist

Wow the butthurt in the comments is INTENSE

Art is art.
Art doesn't need to be serious, art doesn't need to show political views, art doesn't need to be politically correct, art cares not about your own tastes nor your political agenda.
Stop being so anal and let artists draw whatever the fuck they want o.o
Sachi-pon Featured By Owner Mar 24, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
artists can draw what they want, and we can say what we want. it looks stupid to draw a political figure because they're "cute" when you know nothing about that person's political views. and my problem is that people don't even care. they're not even trying to actually learn anything about the situation. it's a very serious situation that people have been killed over. and these artists are turning it into a joke. and this article was just like "hey there's this cool new fanart trend lol yay fun" and it doesn't even mention the serious political issues going on.

and the other problem is that yeah, there's sexism here. this is part of a larger trend in the culture where a woman's looks are the most important thing about her, no matter what else she does or says. i've seen it before with other women, it's not just this one. it gets on my nerves every time. so i said something about it.
Black-Card Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2014
Speaking of serious situations where were the complaints when Hetalia was insanely popular?  D=

I'm sure there were some people offended by its light heartedness and cutesy, attractive males representing countries in a dark time where the Jewish were murdered, the Chinese were raped, or German refugees and prisoners brutalized by violence and rape from rage induced Russians at the end of the war, threatening American soldiers with the same treatment if they dared protect the Germans.

WWII was pretty serious.

Now what I'm curious is, what does Natalia think of her sudden fanbase?
goodygoody-shadow Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2014  Hobbyist Writer
German refugees and prisoners raped by rage-induced Russians?

Whatever the hell you are, I hope a rage-induced rhino takes you from behind. The next thing you'll write is that Hitler was treated unfairly and the Nuremberg trials were too harsh. Or maybe you want to say that Charles DeGaulle was an extremist? Or that the British should not have retaliated against the nice German chaps who were roasting their children alive?
Do you want to know what Germans did to my family and to the family of my friends? They bombed them, they imprisoned them -- one even had his blood nearly sucked dry when he was a kid, so that a German soldier could get a transfusion. A belarussian general was taken prisoner and was frozen in a block of ice as part of the Germans' ice experiments. Gypsy twins from a circus were captured and sent to Mendel's labs so that he could saw them in half and sew their torsos together. Else Koch and Rosa Mandel specialized in maiming, castrating and draining children and abusing female prisoners.

And what did the "rage-induced Russians" do near the end of the war? They tried to rebuild their god damn country that was torn apart. They tried to pick up the limbs of their children and give them a proper burial. A few of my relatives were in Germany, in Berlin even. One of them suffered a shrapnel wound near his heart when he rescued the life of a german girl as a german-thrown grenade flew to her feet. But where were the German soldiers' help, when bombs flashed down upon thousands of innocents? Oh right, THEY were the ones who targeted civilians in the first place!

Go read a book, you illiterate brainwashed trash. Try "The Destiny of a Man."
And if you want to know what lovely things the American soldiers were doing the second World War, try "Catch 22." Joe Heller sure as hell knew what he was writing about, as did Sholokhov. There was more than one Aarfy and Milo in the US army. Hell, from North America, Canada was the only country to do more than just take PR photos of themselves shaking hands with the Russians or the French.
The most noteworthy things the Americans did during the war, aside from making extensive use of local prostitutes and exploiting the market, was bomb cities that were almost completely devoid of military personnel (Dresden, cough cough, Hiroshima and Nagasaki cough hack wheeze). Kurt Vonnegut, I am sure, could clue you in on the Dresden bit, having written about it in "Slaughterhouse-Five."

While I dislike Hetalia, I do not hate it nearly as much as I hate you for that single comment you posted. Why? Because I realize that Hetalia is pure entertainment targeting a teenie-chick demographic -- and your post was written by a human being (arguably). Though I might not be a fan of Hetalia, I don't insult its fans or diss the creator, because I feel that it's none of my business (like if somebody likes MLP, or Sailor Moon, or DBZ, or even drawing blueberry-fetish-themed Megaman fanart -- I just won't care).
But this comment -- jesus christ, I've seen comments like this before and they piss me off to the extreme, because whenever I read them, I realize that other people might read them and agree with them, and that worries me. It worries me that propaganda BS seeps into the brains of people like yourself and and takes over the little grey cells, as Poirot would put it, and the world winds up with one more cold-war-fanatic who can fool himself (or herself or itself) into believing that Russia is terrible and all glory and praise to Vaterland USA, brothers EU and Heilige Romische Reich Deutscher Nation.
The only thing missing in the picture is Napoleon's hat, coat and tails, and we might as well forego with education and return to the simpler times of the half-retarded neanderthals.

As for Natalia -- she is a minor heroine, but I am sure that she will prove herself with even more noteworthy achievements in her career to come. That fanart is painted of her is nothing fantastically odd -- is this any stranger than, say, people drawing fanart of gamers/LPers?
Black-Card Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2014
I should have added soldiers to that "rage induced" part. I'll read this "Destiny of a Man" if that'll make you calm down and read Erich Hartmann's accounts of being a POW, but I get the feeling you'll refuse.

You mean Hiroshima didn't have the HQ of the 59th army among other units and Nagasaki didn't contain major factories and depots that supplied the military their weapons and equipment?

Maybe we can agree that no one was innocent during that war except the civilians.

Do you like rhinos ?  *wiggles eyebrows*
