Giving curators the recognition they deserve.

With the launch of the Watch Feed, you can also now watch Collections made by other deviants. Collections are surfaced through the Watch Feed, creating a new way to discover and expose artwork on DeviantArt. Collections have been given additional exposure by appearing on deviation pages as well as tag pages.

Watchcollection by danlev

“I am loving Collections as well. I am proud of my Collections and am glad they will finally be getting notice. And it also gives more exposure to the artists as this is more viral in nature than simply faving something then making an art feature journal to share it with others.”  —GillianIvy

Managing Collections

When you watch someone, you’ll automatically be watching all of their Collections — but you can also choose to enable or disable watching Collections on a deviant-by-deviant basis.

To watch only specific Collections from a deviant, uncheck “Collections” on their watch settings (now you’re watching none of their Collections), and then visit one of their Collections and then click “+Watch Collection.”

If you’d prefer not to have one of your Collections displayed on other deviants' Activity Feeds, you can visit the Collection Options area of your Collection and check "Disable watching".

Collections on Deviation Pages

Art curators are among the unsung heroes of DeviantArt, and with these new changes, we’re now surfacing Collections on deviation pages, allowing you to discover curations of artwork that include that specific deviation.

Tagging Collections

Using the new Tags feature, you can now tag your Collections with relevant topics. Tags will display on your Collections. Relevant Collections will be displayed on tag pages, giving more exposure to curators’ work.

Share your thoughts on the new Collections features by posting a Status Update using the #Collections tag.

As DeviantArt grows, we strive to find more ways to connect you with the things and people that matter to you most. After months of designing, testing, and engaging in community conversations around the shape of things to come, we’re proud to announce a series of features that will bring you closer to the community.

The concept of collections is flawed, they act and appear like folders, they duplicate the functionality of folders and yet are meant to enhance the concept of a folder in some 'vague' way.  Artists who have grown used to computers and the way they organise content don't understand the concept of 'collections' in the way that they do understand folders. In general I find that they just don't use collections at all. The concept as well as being vague, is poorly implemented too. So much of what DA does is just flawed and not thought-through so as to make some functionality both useless and annoying at the same time. Folders should have been named collections from the very start as that is how artists group their work, in folders that represent collections...

Collections as implemented by DA have been separated from folders in both organisation and structure, this is a mistake. It duplicates and potentially doubles the workload maintaining two disparate sets of content with similar names and structure. Folders and collections should be combined so that a collection becomes a selection of items extracted from various folders but still relating directly to them. The tools should be there to allow easy extraction from a folder and visually it should be made clear from whence the deviation comes.

I think DA have wasted their time on how they have implemented collections. Flawed and badly done.

x) Still waiting for user profiles to have subfolders for Collections, though. That seems to be one thing that didn't get added, miraculously, with all this new focus on Collections.

User Profiles:
:bulletgreen: Subfolders for the Gallery!
:bulletred: No subfolders for Collections.

Groups:
:bulletgreen: Subfolders for the Gallery!
:bulletgreen: Subfolders for the Collections!

Love all the new attention on Collections, but the lack of this particular feature is still a glaring problem that really has no excuse for not being implemented yet. Not only would user collections be a lot more organized and less lengthy with most folders being inside other folders as opposed to extending someone's Favorites page for a few football fields like they do now, but incorporating subfolders would only enhance the newly-created tagging and 'More Like This' systems.

I really like being able to watch collections but I have a couple of questions.
Is there any way for me to know if people are watching any of my collections?
And is there, or will there be, a way to browse collections?

I unchecked everyone that I watch so that I DON'T see their collections (so that I can ONLY see the collections that I want to follow), but the only collections I can see are from people I watch, collections that I don't, so I can't find the ones that I actually want to see :(

Wait a minute... As I know, to watch the specific collection you need to go to that collection and click the "Watch collection" button at the right top corner. Thus you won't become a watcher of the collection's owner, but will receive the possibility to follow the collection with your Watch Feed. Am I right assuming that you did these steps but your Watch Feed doesn't show the content?

Yep that's correct. I went to a collection created by somebody who I do not watch, clicked the "Watch Collection" button, but the collection doesn't show up in my watchfeed. The people that I DO watch, I unselected the option to watch their collections, but all of their collections ARE showing up in my watchfeed.

The collections of people you watch remain in the Watch Feed because deactivation of this option affect only pieces which were added AFTER you decided to turn it off. In fact, based upon that I suppose that new collections (which you activated manually with "Watch collection" button) will appear in the Watch Feed after their owners will supply something NEW in them.
We could check this, actually. I added to watch one of your collections (Backgrounds). For now it doesn't display in my Watch Feed. Add something new there (anything - you can always delete it when the test will be finished) and let's observe the result.

Oh, thanks for letting me know about that first part. That seems a little weird in action. If you guys are taking suggestions (and if it's possible) I would prefer it if the watchfeed was effected by all changes that I make to my Watch List. It would make for easier browsing IMO.
I added something to the backgrounds collection. Let me know if it shows up.

On that same line with my watchfeed not changing based on what I do AFTER things have already showed up:
Because the creator of this collection (that I DO want to see) hasn't added to it in the last few hours, and because I can still see a person that I watch's collections since it wasn't effected by my "unwatching" after the fact, I can't find the new collection that I want to watch since it's bogged down. (If you can understand that? I think I made it sound a little confusing :P)
Hopefully that gives reason to my first line above about easier browsing^ :)

The Watch Feed (along with all features from this update) is still in development so I think we'll see changes there soon. As for suggestions - you can post them here or here, if you wish so. Or wait until the next Site Update and post your suggestion in comments.
I added something to the backgrounds collection. Let me know if it shows up.
Yeah, as I thought it appeared right away.
If you can understand that? I think I made it sound a little confusing
This behaviour (I mean the Watch Feed logic) is really a little bit... illogical? I mean that you expect system to do one thing and it does another. It's still raw for sure, but it's natural for the new things, actually - to be raw and imperfect.)

I hope that this doesn't create duplicates in my inbox. For example if I was watching Artist X and the collections of Artist Y. If Artist Y added a deviation by Artist X to their collections, would I be told twice? I hope not.

Otherwise, I think that this is a good idea as long as it can be disabled.

:iconrot8erconex:
Rot8erConeX Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2014
I'm assuming you would be told twice.  I follow a few groups and a few deviants.  On the rare occasions that one of my watchees makes a deviation that goes into one of the groups (most recently it happened with Purrdemonium in a Majora's Mask group), the deviation in question shows up twice in my inbox (once as "by Purrdemonium" and once as "now in MajorasMask3D").

I also get told twice whenever I submit art to one of the groups I follow.  Once in my watch feed as a new deviation in the group, and once in my correspondence as the group accepting me submitting it.

Anyway, while I don't yet know if "Artist X faving something by Artist Y" will specifically cause a double-up in your inbox, it's safe to assume it will because there's precedents of double-ups occurring when aspects of our inbox interact.

Now your collections can be more of a showcase to feature themes, etc.  I'd just start fresh new folders and slowly reorganize things as you feel like it.  They will only get updates on folders you add stuff to.  I do have an adult themed bunch of faves, I may have to make a specific folder for that.

Thank you! Now I get that I can disable watching. But just one more thing that worries me.. I see that I'm forced to watch a deviant's collection because of this update. Now I'm wondering, if I 'disable watching', will my own watchers still be notified even if they didn't do anything to uncheck or unfollow my collections?

Sorry really if I seem losing my common sense here. ^^; I'm both confused and anxious 'cause I fave massively and I don't want to annoy my watchers. It'll be painful to lose them just because they're seeing tons of notifications of what I fave. :noes:

No worries. :)

If you disable watching on your collections, it only means that your watchers don't get updates when you fave something. It doesn't affect their getting notices (whatever settings you've used with respect to that) on anything you upload or post to your account (i.e. journals).

So, regardless of whether they unchecked collections, since you've made it something not to be followed, they won't receive a notice. :)

When you watch a collection, you shouldn't be listed as a watcher of that individual-
However, the collection should have a counter at the top that says "x amount of people watching this collection", and we deserve notifications in our message center for it.

You aren't listed as a watcher of that member if you're just watching their Collection.

And you're right, adding a counter would be very useful! This is something we've been considering for the next version of it. :)

Cool! Thanks for your reply. About collections, I think the only other things you might want to think about are how collections are "stuck" together in activity feed. If I only want to click on one picture, I still have to go through the entire folder instead of simply right-clicking the image. This makes it seem rather clunky IMO.

Also when watching a user, it seems as though I automatically am watching all their collections. This clutters my activity feed with a lot of content that I may not be interested in. Maybe an option to unwatch some folders?

The way it is now, I would be forced to unwatch the user just because dA wouldn't let me unwatch individual folders.

I agree 100% about the "clicking the whole collection" issue. Our team felt like this would be best to encourage people to visit the whole Collection, but I definitely agree that it's frustrating when you just want to see one image. I will pass along this feedback to our team again.

When you watch a user, you can uncheck "Collections" (to unwatch all of them) and then you can manually select which ones you'd like to watch. This isn't the most intuitive experience, and we definitely need to make that functionality a little clearer.

Your mockups are great! Thanks so much for the effort you put into that! Will share them with the team! :)

Maybe you could make clicking an image in the collections function in a way similar to "More Like This": have the image clicked show up full sized then have the thumbnails for the rest of the collection below so users are encouraged to explore more.
Regarding collections themselves, it would be great to have a "More Like This" feature to show similar collections and/or have something that suggests artwork to look at based on what's in a collection.

More of a personal request than a suggestion, I would love to be able to have some sort of tiered collection systems.  For instance, I have a collection for mechs, it would be neat to be able to list a certain number of images in there as favorite mechs and then have numerous other images in there that I keep around because I find notable, but I don't consider top quality.

Thanks danlev!! I'm really, really happy I could help. It means a lot that you would take the time to reply to me, I have been feeling ignored for so long. I think that this has tons of potential. I only have one more question before you leave-

What would you think about adding support for userstyles? You know, the stuff trezoid makes like deviantGLASS v1.2. There are so many features that the community wants, but your team only has a limited amount of time to make them. If you add direct support for userstyles, everyone's happy- and since it would be a premium feature, you would get more subscribers! It's a win-win.

Isn't that what deviantart was all about in the first place? When it started wasn't dA a place for custom wallpapers, skins and mods? Adding support for userstyles would mean people could truly make deviantart their own like never before- There could be a gallery called "installable user styles" or something. I know you can use scripts to install them, but if they were native to deviantart not only would it be easier, but it could actually increase exposure for them. Just an idea, I don't know if the technical side of this could work..
