With over 1.5 million comments posted per day, deviantART's commenting system provides the backbone for fostering relationships across the globe. Whether mentoring one another, providing artistic support, or checking in with a friend, commenting is one of the site's most used and loved features.

To highlight this vital aspect of community interaction and provide more control around conversations, we’re proud to release the first in a series of improvements to comments.

Featured

The Featured comments option allows deviants to showcase the most meaningful or interesting feedback they’ve received — helping those comments stand out from the rest. When someone leaves a feature-worthy reply on one of your deviations, you can now highlight that comment from the pencil menu.

Featured comments on deviations are highlighted and denoted with a special label.

Edit

Whether it’s a flubbed letter or simple misspelling, embarrassing typos happen to us all. With the ability to edit comments, you can now avoid awkward follow-up explanations. Located in the pencil menu, the “Edit Comment” feature allows you to update a reply you’ve posted in the last 24 hours.

Edited comments are denoted by an “Edited” label next to the timestamp. Clicking the timestamp will display a log of changes made.

Hide

To withdraw a comment you’ve previously posted, use the pencil menu’s “Hide Comment” option. This will remove your comment from view, remove it from the Message Center, and prevent it from getting replies, effectively erasing the comment from conversation.

Comments can be hidden by their owner at any time — there is no time restriction on this feature.

Looking Ahead

The Featured, Edit, and Hide improvements are the first in a larger comments revamp still to come.  This update could include anything from up-voted comments to comment sorting, and much more. You tell us what you've always wanted out of a comment box! Revitalizing our comments system is the first step of many to elevate conversations and foster meaningful connections.

Get started!

Have you received a noteworthy comment on a deviation or Journal? Mark it as Featured and share the comment link here. We want to see the comments you value most, and what you feel is worthy of attention!

Hide button should remove the comment from sight fully instead "Hidden by Commenter" to mimic delete feature better.

I have a bit of a problem with the "hidden  comment" part. I'm unable to see the comments when users decide to hide comments on my page. It's not in my inbox so I can't see it. I find that a problem because people may decide to spam and harass others and will have no idea who it is because they're unable to see the commenter.

On my account, I have the right to see who comments on my page despite them hiding it. Could you please look into that, because I really can't stand a bunch of hidden comments on my page.

I notice that we still can't see "Hidden by Commenter" comments whether they are on our own page, art, journals, polls, or not. You don't even get them in your inbox once they are hidden. To be honest I'm really not glad about that... I wish the feature was either changed so we could either see it OR so it was undone. It has caused me more annoyance than bliss so far.

Being able to edit a comment after nearly 14 years of the site existing, took way too long.

Edit: It seems to work.

Is there a way to get help on this part?

More people(Myself Included) are getting these things, I and others feel that a user is leaving nasty comments and then hiding them right away. Is there something that can be done about this, or as a community are we doing to have to deal with this drama? (It just makes some of us feel nervous)
I love all the stuff about the new comment feature except this. Any Tips?

Yay finally >.<

Just one question: Why make the "edit comments" thing avaliable only in the first 24 hours?

Probably to avoid abuse. One can theoretically post something, wait for someone to reply, then change one's own comments to make the other guy look like an idiot. I can't remember where, but I distinctly remember someone trolling someone using the delete comment function on Facebook.
Basically, P1 goaded P2 into claiming she wasn't talking to herself, then P1 deleted all his comments, effectively making it look like she was arguing with an imaginary friend.

well it's easy to assume what actually happened, right?

I know people can be stupid sometimes but no way are they that lonely >.<
