In this week's Site Update, we do not have any public-facing changes. DeviantART staff just returned from the staff retreat as mentioned in last week's Site Update. This week, we are going through the hackathon projects that the Devious Technology team worked on, prioritizing them, doing further research, and then deciding how they can be used in the future.

Next week, we will back on our regular schedule and should have more updates for you!

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
  • We appreciate the comments we recieved about last week's Devious Technology hackathon projects! However, we'd like to reiterate that these projects were explorations, not formal undertakings. If we decide to implement any of these ideas on site, they will go through further discussion and consideration before being fully built.
  • Feedback regarding an updated statistics system was positive.
  • Users would like a Sta.sh mobile interface. From ~BornLegandary
  • Katara-Alchemist put together a visual suggestion that would track and display works in progress without having to post a new deviation each time an update is made.

What do you think of Favourites and Collections? Currently, you can either Favourite artwork or add it to a Collection within your Favourites. Do you simply use the Favourites feature or do you prefer to organize your favourite artwork into Collections? Do you use the drag and drop function to collect and share deviations? Once you've favourited something, do you find it easy to organize and keep track of? Are there any improvements you'd like to see made to the Favourites and Collections feature?

I usually add my favorites to a collection because it makes it so much easier for me to look back at them when they are nicely grouped together. I really like the drag and drop option. But the favorites button is also nice. I just think the drag and drop is one less step to clicking favorites then clicking the category you want it in. Now something nice would be since I also have dragged things accidentally into my fav's would be maybe a "Are you sure" or to eliminate the extra step maybe you have to right click drag to drop and drag into fav's or double click and drag? Pretty much just a certain sequence specific to drop and drag so there's no accidental drags into fav's. I do find it pretty easy to organize and keep track of the favs.

I hate the drag and drop method. I have accidentally pulled it up and favorited many works that did not deserve it. I personally like to organize by collections. I would love it if we could reorganize the order of collections. I would also like to see a search in favorites.

Subfolders would be great for favourites, like if you have a folder 'Video games fan art' and a subfolders there for different games, like 'Pokémon', 'Metroid', etc...

I LOVE the idea of being able to track your progress in sta.sh. I think it could really be used as a tool to create hype and get step by step feedback on a current project. I have some HUGE projects I'd love to be able to do that with.

I really like how collections and favourites work right now, but it would help organize it more if we could make folders within the folders.

Favourites and collections as they are work fine for me. The drag and drop is great, as it the drop down menu from the favourites button. Being able to do a keyword search, or artist search within your favourites and collections would be a great feature to add though, if you are planning to make some changes. I have a HUGE collection of favourites and sometimes I know something's in there but it's hard to find.

huge majority of what i fav goes into the main favorites. i've got a few collections - like Stock, Lit (literature), Journals, Stuff (for tutorials, freebies, and other useful things), Inspiration, Contests - but they don't contain much deviations. which means that almost 14,000 deviations are just plain favorites

i like going through them when i need inspiration, calm myself down, whatever.. and having them in folders just wouldn't really do for me as then i'd be forced to go through folder by folder, so basically theme by theme, or art type by art type..

search option in the favorites would be a must really, but i've just read the answer to one of the comments about how you need to upgrade your search engine first. so that means that sooner or later this feature will be implemented, right?
and knowing that is good enough for me :) i know it's a huge site, can't be easy to run it and keep everyone happy

 keep up the good work :)

"What do you think of Favourites and Collections?..."

I'd love if we would have a search in the favourite folder.

1. - I have collections, but many times I just hit the fav button if I visited a good deviation, then I end up with a chaos in the favourite folder.
With a search I could find most of the "XY" related pictures, then move them into the "XY" collection folder, then do it with the other themes too, and then I could sort what left.
Of course I can imagine other sorting options too, that would be useful.
It's just an idea, that I could use a search for this too.

2. - Earlier I commented with the problem, when I remembered that I faved a deviation but I just couldn't find and couldn't feature it. With a search I would have a chance to find pictures in these situations.

At this moment, I can't really find it easy to organize these folders, if it would be easy and fast I'd do it, but maybe it's just me... :)

rephrasing this sentence in my previous post: "There is just one thing I like about being able to go to my faves gallery, and that is to be able audit a watch." And to clarify, by audit I mean checking whether I want to still watch that person, using deviations I faved by that person as a way to decide. Plus, sometimes if I unwatch someone I may even decide to unfave some/all of the deviations I faved by him/her.

I don't remember getting notified of this site update. Do we still get notified of these? It's not cool to suddenly stop these these notifications without telling us how we can opt in.

Please see my journal for site suggestions: [link]

As for what I think of favorites and collections, I use collections but I resent the fact that I should need to. There needs to be a fave search function or automatic sorting of faves. We should also be able to make our fave widgets ignore collections.

I understand that fave searching is not yet possible but that doesn't mean we can't have alternatives to using collections. Widgets are on the verge of making collections unnecessary. Because what's the point of going in your own faves section. "oh I think I'll look at art I'll like" ... "oh lemme choose a collection, I think I am in the mood for fantasy art" ... "that was some good fantasy art." Widgets are smart because they bring your faves to you, and it's random so you don't have to choose. So really there is no point to a faves gallery at all, much less collections. It's just one thing I like about being able to go to gallery is to be able audit a watch. To be able to see all works you ever faved by an artist, to see how many you faved and how good those works are. But I can see myself giving up the ability to do this if it means I get to "boycott" ollections. Problem is that fave widgets force you to use collections. But I've decided to "boycott" them as well. (This can be seen on my page.) [link]

There is a certain art site that allows you to sort all your faves by artist in alphabetical order. It's a jank setup because it always starts you at names that start with A and you have to manually find the page with the artist name you were looking for. (why can't I just type in the name of the artist and it goes to that page for me? Why can't I jump to a specific letter, even?) But here's the thing -- It's still better than the way DA does it, because the only difference is that with DA you have to spend hours manually organizing your faves just to get the same awkward functionality that other site gets you from the start.

Hey there! If you watch #hq, you'll get regular notifications when we post site updates. :) Also, as far as widgets go, they are not currently self-sufficient, as the content of the favorites/collections widgets are determined by the content of a user's favorites/collections.

I am saying that I would like all my fave widgets to duplicate the normal (non-premium) fave widget. I honestly don't see why DA doesn't give us the ability to do this; the site assumes I want to display collections. It only lets me add fave collection widgets (up to 5) but not more normal fave widgets.

When choosing a collection for my widget to display, I can choose "Favorites". But that just refers to the Featured section of my faves. Unfortunately I have nothing there, because all my faves are in collections. There is no way to make the widgets pull deviations from all my favorites like the normal fave widget does.

Granted I could go through the trouble of moving (or copying) all my faves into Featured, and then having 5 "Random from Favorites" widgets, but it is arbitrary of the site to force me to do it this way. Not to mention it is redundant to require my Featured section be a duplicate of my Browse section, and it means I can't use my Featured section for anything else. (and because I fave things first and move them into collections later, it will be difficult to keep track of which faves I organized and which I haven't, it also all make the process of organizing faves more difficult.)

In favorites and collections I wish there was a way to sort out deviations just like the main home Category search, and the already suggested search bar.
Also the drag and drop system works pretty nice if you have less than 7 collections, because after that everything gets too messy and laggy since the icons for the collections are too big.
I would also suggest to add an option to drag many deviations to one collection, specially in the messages page, that way -for example- if I create a collection for a group I'm in, I can drag the whole stack to that collection.
Last, it would be really nice if there was a "public/private collection" option to well, of course, have some privacy on what I fave (or don't fave).

One last suggestion: It would be reaally awesome to expand the drag and drop and collection feature to artists and groups! It also happens really often that I add someone to my watch and then it gets lost somewhere in my constantly growing watch list and well, I don't really remember them until they post somehting and appear on my message list. Plus, it would be nice if you could look your Watch/Friend List as the "About us" list in a group: with name, icon and two deviations (or at least a pop-up with that information), because is not like I can actually remember who is who just by looking their names and I don't really want to waste time clicking each name to see their gallery....

Just something I'm noticing about the article itself: your list of previous site updates is getting so long that it's pushing the twitter links off of the article. May I suggest maybe only featuring the five or ten most recent updates to prevent that?

It's super useful and saves lots of time because it's easy to find a deviation that I faved decades ago. Well I also look for things that are free like stock photos, brushes, and other stuff then add them to my collections so when I use those free stuffs it's easy to link back my artwork to the owners of those stockphotos and other stuffs. I also fave some poetry and add them to my collections.

I usually just favorite deviations instead of dragging them to a specific folder. I once started to organize them, but I stopped because there were too many :B I guess I got lazy!

I do love the option to keep them in separate folders though. It's easier to find deviations that I've put in the 'DD's I've given' folder, for example, than to search for them within all the other favorites.

The one thing I don't like that much is seeing news articles that I faved on my profile page, but that might be solved by putting them in a different folder.

You know when you get to drag a deviation to your favourites folders at the top of the screen? Well, it'd be nice to be told whether that deviation was already in that folder - would save a lot of duplicating.

Hey there! Noted your suggestion, but I just wanted to let you know that if you've added a deviation to a collection and you try to add it to the same collection, it shouldn't duplicate. It'll just bump it to the top of your collection, is all. :)

It should let you do so. It'll remain in the collection it's already in, and also appear in the one you add it to. You can also do this from your favorites page by clicking the pencil when you hover over a deviation, it gives you the option to copy to another folder. :)

I don't organize my favorites very much, there's only a few general folders. So it's very hard to find anything I want to find in there. A search bar would be nice.

I don't drag and drop. I used to when I had more folders in my collection on a different account that I no longer use, but I stopped now. It's easier to use the favorite button's drop down list.

When I fav stuff I add it by using the arrow next to the favorite button. I never use the drag feature for fear of it glitching and lagging.
It would be neat to see that when you are in your favorites and click the 'browse' link, that under all the art pieces it tells you which favorite collection you put it in. :meow:

To improve the handling of Favorites, at least for me, I would like to request adding options to:

Select a "start" page number for the SitBack feature. Right now, SitBack always initiates playing from the most current deviation added to the folder, no matter where you are looking within the folder. When you have lots of Faves like I have (a bit over 5,000), you never get the chance to view your older Faves using SitBack; well, unless you let it run unattended for a half hour while you go fix lunch or something and then come back later to watch it. But that's a rather haphazard method to use to enjoy your Favorites. Using Collections, of course, gives one less deviations inside one folder to run through; but then, for me, I might only get to look at insects rather than at the variety of art I have in my general Favorites folder.

Have the option to select navigation page numbers from both the top and the bottom of the page. When doing general browsing through Favorites, it seems so pointless to have to navigate all the way to the bottom of the page just to move on to the next page or manually enter a page number to skip over pages. And, yes, I know that I can quickly get to the bottom using Command+Down Arrow. But that means going back and forth between mouse and keyboard over and over and over again, which is no fun.

Make it possible to add a deviation to multiple folder locations via the "Add to Favorites" button. Right now, you can add the deviation to your Favorites folder OR you can add the deviation to one of your Collection folders, but you can't add it both to your Favorites and your Collections from that handy-dandy drop-down list because that button immediately becomes a "Remove from Favorites" button as soon as the first selection is made. After making your first selection from the button, you then have to drag and drop the deviation to your other folders. Of course, to make this change happen, one would have to click at least twice every time, once to choose a location and another time to indicate "OK, I'm through making all my selections," but I think I could handle that :). Or, better yet, you could add a separate "Remove from Favorites" button so that we could use the "Add to Favorites" button multiple times, with locations grayed out that have already been designated ;).

Allow members to sort deviations within their folders by artist names. Sometimes I'd just love to be able to view all the deviations I've faved for a particular artist, grouped together on one page or adjacent pages. This type of sorting might also provide an alternative for members who keep separate Collection folders for each of their favorite artists, which can ultimately run into a hundred or more collection folders.

As to your question about my own system of working with Favorites, I usually add a deviation first to my Favorites via the "Add to Favorites" button, then I click on the Favorites link next to Friends on the bar to display my Collection folders, then I manually drag and drop the deviation to one or more of my Collections (like I might add a stock photo of a horse to Favorites, to my "Great Stock" collection, and then to my "Horses" collection). The much-improved Edit button that was added quite some time ago to Favorites has greatly enhanced my ability to manage my Favorites!
