In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Film Improvements (Beta Testers Only)

We've made two major changes to film on deviantART! First, film is now fully compatible with Sta.sh and the Sta.sh submission process, allowing you to store and post film deviations directly from your Sta.sh. Secondly, the film player has been overhauled, and the film deviation page has been updated and rebuilt to match the same layout other deviations have, for consistency, ease of use, and better overall appearance.

Sta.sh Writer and deviantART muro Improvements (Beta Testers Only)

We've made some awesome enhancements to deviantART muro as well! We've added several new tools, including the heavily requested Magic Wand tool! This comes with several enhancements to the overall selection and edit menu tools.

We've also added deviantART muro integration to Sta.sh Writer, allowing you to select and edit images in Sta.sh Writer documents directly in deviantART muro.

Change Log

  • On the Browse page, thumbnails did not always properly display in older browsers, such as Safari 5.0 and older, or Chrome 11 and older. Fixed by $ZombieCoder
  • The top and bottom borders for transparent thumbnails looked misaligned in IE9. Fixed by $ZombieCoder
  • The ellipsis-based title cut off looked wrong on some thumbs. This has been changed to allow titles to force the width of the box. Fixed by $ZombieCoder
  • The "background box" behind the thumbnails looked bad on backgrounds other than deviantART's standard color, such as on custom CSS in galleries and faves. It is now a slightly transparent white, so it blends with custom CSS better. Fixed by $ZombieCoder
  • Stored deviations would show a 404 error for their creators. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • The Share button for Tumblr would open the Tumblr share tool in both a popup window and the original deviation window. Fixed by $drommk
  • Margins on some types of journal deviation pages were either too wide or too narrow.Fixed by $Alisey
  • On deviation pages, the text box on the Share modal for notes did not scroll. Fixed by $shahyarg
  • Usernames were briefly not appearing under thumbnails in member Galleries and Favourites. Fixed by $ZombieCoder
  • oAuth app registrations lacked callback url whitelist requirements. This is an additional security measure that was brought to our attention by =Tristan128Implemented by $ZombieCoder
  • Some Groups were unable to update blog rules text field for blog module when configured with specific combination of permissions. Fixed by $DEVlANT

deviantART muro

  • Improper attribution and avatars would occur during Redraw playback. Fixed by $Nodren

Sta.sh

  • Uploading from the File menu wasn't working. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • The £ character wasn't displaying properly in Sta.sh item descriptions and Sta.sh Writer items. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Zoomed-in images weren't displayed as big as they should have been. Fixed by $kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • RGBA is now allowed in more CSS rules for journal skins, notably borders. Fixed by $Alisey
  • The friends picker in the Writer sidebar would occasionally overflow. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Writer's page height would not adjust when a member clicked Journal Extras. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Adding emoticons sometimes triggered a new line. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Dragging in an emoticon put it in a pointless list. Fixed by $Alisey
  • The Writer scrollbar would occasionally be too tall. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Emoticons had the pencil menu and up/down arrows, which were unnecessary. Fixed by $Alisey

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
  • Deviants had positive feedback about the new mobile site!
  • Feedback regarding mention notifications was mixed, if not cautiously positive. Most members said that they would like for it to be an option that could be turned on or off, even those who were positive about it as a feature.
  • *SuperSachiko and =CursedBunny suggested that mention notifications could be limited to people you watch or people who watch you, and many members suggested other settings for notifications.
  • Deviants would like the limit on avatar size to be changed to 25kb. Suggested by `ChrisGranger
  • Managing the price of multiple Prints could be made easier, instead of having to do so individually. Suggested by *Tazzy-
  • A filter to view deviations based on Creative Commons licenses would help deviants find artwork to create with that is open for them to use. Suggested by =Yobtaf
  • Deviants with mature content turned off would like to be able to tell the difference between mature images and mature written work without viewing the work. Suggested by ~Bloodsong13T
  • We appreciate the continued feedback about the new deviantART thumbnails. To clarify, we will not be offering an option to change back to the smaller thumbnails. We strongly believe in the new thumbnails and we will be moving forward with them. When building new features, every option that we offer adds layers of complexity. If there are two options, it can take twice the amount of resources to impliment adjustments, upgrades, and bug fixes. Simplicity makes a feature stronger and allows us to focus our resources on improving it rather than spending time making sure that both version of the feature actually work and are supported for each change that we make to the site.

Discuss!

Creator Comments
Comments on deviantART are the primary way to interact with other members of the community on deviantART. As part of the new Film pages that were launched to Beta Testers today, comments made by the creator of a deviation are specifically marked out. This feature gives emphasis to an artist's responses and commentary on their own work.

Would you like to see this new feature extended to all deviations to differentiate the artists' comments from community comments and feedback?

I'm curious, as someone who sells artwork, I'm not quite happy that my deviation pages are now advertising my competitors through the 'more like this' which features their work alongside my own - right next to the deviation itself. not to mention taking up the space the deviation should be using.

Is there any way to move this so it does not compete with the initial deviation even while not zoomed in, such as lower on the page or have the option of removing it entirely or edit what it can show (such as relevant work within a certain folder of my gallery).

thanks!

Idea: When we mouse-over a deviation, it should show us if that deviation is in our favourites. Maybe the little :+favlove: could appear in the corner or something.

I'd like to see the ability to rename the "Featured' gallery in Groups / Super Groups. Specifically, I would want to rename my gallery folder to "Recently Submitted".

Admins... I understand how you want to update every week, but you should have taken the FEEDBACK into account from the poll you made way back before making the decision to change the thumbnails.

Might I remind you that this is not just YOUR website? We are a community here, and you are not respecting that idea at all. You admins may love the new thumbnails, but it is not fair that you ignore the 95% of your community that hates them.

We have TOLD you what we don't like about them. We're not whining for no apparent reason, y'know.
They are an eyesore.
They're unfair with portrait vs landscape.
People can't possibly get more views on artworks as they used to.
People feel there is no need to click them anymore.
They have destroyed the layout of many deviants' galleries (including my own)
*** You could give us an option to change the sizes of the thumbnails in our gallery at least.

....I could go on forever. And I will. I won't stop fighting until you people listen to us.

Because right now, you're not listening.

I second that. Giving us an option for the size is not a good option though as it will put more stress on the database, require more maintenance and it will fragment the user experience. I say just make the thumbnails 250px instead of 300px.

Everything else you said I agree with.

They should do a feature that allows a deviation to get views without actually visiting the deviation page. There, problem fixed for ya.

Totally agree with you.

Also the new thumbnails don't load.
They turn into giant green BLANK boxes.
Galleries either don't load or take forever.
And when they do load it takes way too long to scroll through or make corrections.
They also seem to be affecting emoticons that are used on the same page as the deviation in this RETARDED new thumbnail scheme.

Beta definitely looks better (the icons particularly) but I would keep the "Popular 1 week" menu was it is without beta. I quite like the orange button in beta though. The website shouldn't become too flashy but I'm all for adding some color instead of having to look at pale green the whole time.

Ah I see! And I can't really disagree with you there.

OH! About the thumbnails (or as people are calling them because they're so much bigger 'toenails' )
Seeing as how you're another one of the fellow new thumbnail dislikers, and would clearly prefer NOT to have these new thumbnails (or at least an option to go to smaller instead of staying with these), then please, feel free to drop by Thumbnails not Toenails (short way of saying 'Bring back or give us the option of smaller thumbnails instead of leaving us with these huge toenails instead!') over at [link]
We've also got a petition that you can sign (just your DA username, not any other info) here at [link]
If we get enough large thumbnail disgruntled people to sign it to show to the DA admins, they'll have to listen, right?

We're just starting out with this group, so anyone who joins together can help! Every voice is important and counts!

I think there should be an ability to rate an artist's based on their commission transactions. It would allow feedback to others who are interested in commissioning an artist. It could contain information such as the start of the transaction (when the person paid), beginning of project (established by the artist), and date of completion. It could have the commissioner rate how satisfied they were with the communication with the artist, the speed of the artist, and other aspects of the commission. It could give future commissioners an idea of how well you work with your clients as well as the artist reviewing their client.

I think it would be a great thing. :)

Submit videos to DA? Yes.
Submit ANY video to DA? No.
The uploads have to go through an approval system, and they can only be art films you yourself made. Not family videos or home videos or tv show videos or anything.

I thought I was the only one having the notes problem...it's kind of hard to roleplay when the notes box is so small, I've been having to write my notes on Word before copy and pasting to the writer box...please fix.

Why did the note box shrink? Is it a bug, or is it a new update? With all of the space the note box takes up, the text box should be the size of the entire thing.

I'd like it if we could filter our deviation searches by excluding galleries. Say, I want to look at pictures of waterfalls, but I don't want to see fan art, artisan crafts or manga and anime.

For creator comments, it would be better to make the comment box subtler, or maybe even take it away all together and leave the creator symbol there.

DA admins,

As much as we love the updates, I must speak for me and many other deviants in saying that the note system needs to be fixed. Yes extra features such as being able to search out various notes or being able to "nuke" all of the notes at once to clear the note system. But the shrinking of the note typing box makes things very very difficult to compose a note to another person, be it that of a normal note, story posting , or Role playing.

So this is more of a suggestion if anything, PLEASE please fix the note system as far as the size of the typing box. At least put it back to it's normal comfortable size. I doubt that this would get much attention but I wanted to at least try to voice the opinions of many other deviants on this site. PLEASE take this note into consideration.

Keep up the great work on making the site better though =3
