Site Update: Message Center Journals

Fri Mar 30, 2012, 1:14 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Browse Through Journals in Your Message Center
When browsing through deviations in your Message Center, you can use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to flip through artwork and use the "Remove From Messages" button to remove each of those deviations. Many people have been requesting that this feature be extended to Journals as well. We're happy to tell you that we just added this functionality!

Pages on the "Journal History" Widget
Many members have requested that "Next" and "Previous" buttons be added to the "Journal History" widget to allow you to browse through more than just the most recent Journals. This feature is now available to all members and Groups. To install this widget on your Profile, Journal, or Group, click the "Edit Page" button on one of those pages and install the "Journal History" widget.

Age, Sex, and Location Removed From Comment Business Cards
Last week, we launched Comment Business Cards -- which display a deviant's age, sex, location, artist type, and new member status next to comments.  After reviewing your helpful feedback and going through thousands of comments, journals, and forum posts, we've collected your responses.

Even though we were only displaying information that members had made public on their profiles, some people had concerns about displaying it next to all of their comments. Some had issues with privacy while others had concerns about being stereotyped or prejudged based on their age, sex, and location. We understand your concerns and in response, we've removed age, sex, and location from the Comment Business Cards. We believe that these changes will make the feature more useful to everyone.

Updates to the Preview of New Thumbnails
Last week, we shared a preview of deviantART's new thumbnails. We appreciate the feedback everyone gave about the way the artwork was presented. To make the new browsing experience more tidy, we're testing left alignment of the thumbnails. We believe that the new thumbnails are a better way to present the artwork within the browsing experience.

New Ways to Receive Prints Profits!
For years, deviantART has been helping artists sell their art through our Prints program. Because the process of receiving payments from your art sales has been less than ideal, we've worked hard on a new earnings system. We've heard your feedback and suggestions, and want to give you a preview of three ways you will be able to receive profits from the Prints that you've sold.

Bug Fixes

  • Thanks to community reports, we were able to hone in on a few advertisers that were running auto-play audio ads on deviantART. We're confident we've addressed the immediate issue, but we're taking additional actions with all of our advertising partners to make sure the culprits don't sneak onto our pages via different channels or partners. If you use Firefox and would like to help report bad ads, try installing our Bad Ad Report Tool.
  • The "drag and collect" notice briefly stopped showing above the thumbs on the front page. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Changed file type restrictions in the X11 mouse cursors category and other appropriate Linux/UNIX categories to accept .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 files. Fixed by drommk
  • The confirmation message for the "remove all comments" message in the Message Center was unintuitive and confusing. Fixed by muteor
  • When a member used the "Way Back" search for the first time, it defaulted to 1969, the year when dA had no submissions. Fixed by drommk
  • When using the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to browse deviations, there were some bugs when a deleted deviation was encountered. Fixed by muteor
  • Emails that end with "+something" or periods placed in the address were not treated as duplicates allowing deviants (and mostly spammers) to create a large number accounts with what is the same email address. Those are aliases, and should be stripped for dupe detection. Fixed by muteor
  • For a brief time, removing a group favorite actually added the deviation to your personal favorites. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Some thumbnails were slightly clipped by the right side browser border in browse mode. Fixed by drommk
  • The "full view" size menu disappeared from for a period of time. Fixed by adahacker
  • Hovercards could stay stuck while renaming a stack. Fixed by samshull
  • The hovercard at the very bottom of the page could get cut off. Fixed by samshull
  • Hid the "http://" from the share links for more compact display. Implemented by samshull
  • Older skins no longer interfere with the new version of Writer. Fixed by inazar
  • After clicking the Writer toolbar, you would have to click back in the Writer document before continuing to type. Fixed by inazar
  • No more empty space on the bottom of the Writer page. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback
  • List the date the deviation was last edited on deviation pages. *TheSaltyMonster in the Suggestions Forum
  • You receive a notification when someone comments on your artwork or journals, but when people reply to that comment, you do not receive an additional notification. All comments should send notifications. From *DestinyBlue in the Suggestions Forum
  • =BlissfullySarcastic put together a list of suggestions, which includes customizations to the "custom" widget, several browsing suggestions, and a "watching" widget.
  •  =katara-alchemist, who has been a huge help in contributing to the Site Update articles, suggested Writer improvements for literature including the ability to add chapters and modify the visual design of your workspace. She put together this awesome mockup:

Last Week's Discussion
Last week, we received some valuable feedback from the community about the idea of showing related artwork on deviation pages. People were excited about the idea of artwork discovery and the exposure it could give artists. Some members brought up concerns about their artwork being the focus of the page. Artists agreed that if this feature was added, it should be presented in a way that does not clutter the page. There were also some concerns with the actual artwork that would be shown, including artwork that was "too popular," unrefined, or contained mature content.

I'd like it if people could check something so they could decide if they wanted their comments to display location, age, and sex or have it not display them. I have a name that can easily mean I'll be mistaken for a guy so it would make it less awkward for people if they knew my gender right away.

This has probably been suggested a million times or not at all, so I hope my idea will put into consideration like others. :) I was hoping for us to be able to transfer our current premiums we have on old accounts to new accounts we create. Or is that possible already? :?
swingdancer23 Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
I would love folders within folders in your gallery and favorites, like many have said previously.

For example, I have a favorites folder called Photography. That's great, but I would love to separate them by portraits, landscapes, macro, etc without having to have tons of folders on the main favorites and gallery pages. That way, people could jump straight to what they want to see rather than having to sort through tons of different kinds of pictures.
sonicthemeatball Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2012
    Here are some more.
    - The right to change your birthdate (in case someone makes a mistake when inputting it upon joining DA).
    - Make it possible to transfer a premium membership without going through the help desk.
    - We should be allowed to transfer cake badges.
    - Ban gift art. Most people would rather have requests, because then they can choose what they get.
    - Disclose the reasons for people being banned, if the banned person approves of it.
    - Make it against the rules to feature someone without their permission.
    - Abolish the 100 word limit on critiques. Some people like short critiques.
    - Abolish the search limit. We should have the right to see as many deviations as there are by searching.
    - Why isn't there a search box in Favorites? We deserve the right to search other people's favorites.
    - There should be gallery subfolders.
    - And I am sick of seeing journals in Random Deviations. Journals are not art. There should be a separate Random Journal button.
LadyKinadai Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2012
    - Premium mem transfer = what if your account gets hacked? Then they could easily transfer the mem'ship with no problems.

    - Ban gift art? I think gift art > requests because then it's a surprise and shows that the artist actually wants to draw something for you instead of you asking them what you want. Besides, if it's gift art and you know about it you can also ask what you'd prefer.

    - 100 word limit on critiques. Well, critiques aren't compliments and critiques can easily go over the 100 character limit, which isn't that much in the first place. Most good critiques are well over 100 chars.

    - Search box for favorites =
sonicthemeatball Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2012
Thanks for the opinions, but no, you can't transfer a premium membership without submitting a Help Desk ticket, and that takes at least two days. By the way, I've started some support groups for my suggestions. (I can't post them on the forum or they would be ridiculed.)
LadyKinadai Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2012
No, I mean with what you want; an easier way to transfer without the Help Desk.

Well, if they're going to be ridiculed perhaps it would be difficult to garner support for your suggestions; the gift art thing isn't something I see that could be supported by other people. Like, I understand groups against racist art or child porn, but gift art doesn't seem like too big of a deal.

If a person doesn't like gift art, then they should put it on their profile. It takes a second. And what if people actually LIKE gift art, which a majority of them do, banning it would explode the site with complaints. =P
sonicthemeatball Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2012
Thanks for being clear, and about gift art: maybe there's a solution to please everyone. Maybe they could allow a "Notice" widget that says "this artist doesn't like gifts" or something.
LadyKinadai Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2012
    You're welcome :meow:
Probably! See, the word 'ban' gets people into a tizzy since everyone has a different opinion. :meow: The widget thingy seems like a better idea because it's optional. :)
sonicthemeatball Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2012
Thank you. I'll have to let others know and start a support group.

I submitted a bug report to the Help Desk but I'm pretty sure I'm just going to receive an automated message as per usual which is just oh so helpful, so I'm also going to leave it here:

The new journal feature is majorly glitched. The journals on the sidebar of recent journals do not show all of my journals, and actually, some have completely gone missing from my group journals. I know I never deleted the journals but they are no longer there. These important journals are completely gone. I can't search through them page by page, or on the recent journals side bar. Some journals can be searched page by page, but are not showing up in the side bar at all. I'm going to be incredibly unhappy if your feature has eaten my group journals...

This makings conducting my group very frustrating. When will this bug get fixed? Will I be able to get my journals back?
icefire8521 Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Advanced watch. Being able to watch certain parts of their deviations. Like watching someone's liturature, but not their photography. Most people watch me for my feral art, but I've been posting lit and emotes lately. Maybe they don't wanna watch it, so they edit the watch and click advanced watch or something. Then they would be able to choose which catagories to watch.
Kittybriton Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2012
Not sure if it's a "feature" or a bug, but when I went to look at a new Journal from one of the Devs I follow, there is just [xx] at the top of the page, journal title, and the comments box. WTF?

PLEASE guys make a DELETE comment button, not HIDE! Hiding comments look very unattractive. You can keep the hide comment just in case, but im begging you, make a DELETE comment button. Ill be happy with just that.

I'd like to mention that, this site has finally been allowed on our school's network, and I honestly don't want it to be banned again. I've searched too many innocent keywords, just for, well, a half-naked woman (that is, WITHOUT a mature content warning). Like Pineapple's for instance. Search that and it comes up with a woman in pasties. I'm not in much of a mood to write properly. :I

The thumbnails still look a mess, and don't solve the problem of images in a landscape format being twice the size of in portrait. This gives greater prominence to the landscape format. That's very very poor :-(
I'd rather you leave them as they are.
And please please please don't add anything so they pop up bigger when you hover over them. I'm sick of clicking things that pop up or drop down when i'm trying to do something else, just because the cursor happens to pass over something.

A better way of viewing images would be good. The green background simply doesn't work with most, and with many it looks quite dreadful. It's all about artistic presentation. Look at the Flickr lightbox for an idea of how a background should be neutral.

Uploading needs a major overhaul too. It's very slow and clunky. Decent multiple uploads would be good. Tags i add in Lightroom before exporting photos should be added automatically on DA like they are on many other sites. Wider ranging categories would help. My photos don't always fit what's on offer, and i've seen some quite strong complaints at times when people post in the wrong category as they can be very subjective as to what the category actually is.

I am a Deviant for almost five years, and i am very happy with what i learn here about photography, about people, about reactions, about improvements.
I am a lucky one i have more tahn 100.000 page views and six DD's
I think you do a great job, improving the site, but sometimes i don't understand the reason why such peolpe have so many faves, views or DD's, but that's life and i accept that and try to make some comments and leran
This time i am here just asking if with such great imprivements that you make we can't change the backgroud color to grey or black, or grey/black, i think as an architect that all the works will be more bright, more atractive and the siti will be more fashion
sorry it's only what i think and i always tell what i think

Are you guys aware that your journal update has fucked up group journals? My latest journal for one of my groups doesn't show up under journal history nor does it show up when you click the journal tab, at least it shows up on the main page. Can you guys fix this please? You're seriously making it hard to run a group efficiently when you keep adding more glitches to the several glitches that groups already have, which would be great to have fixed someday soon by the way. :|

I don't know if this has already been suggested, or what... but it would be nice if we were able to delete our own comments after we post them.
dshrader Featured By Owner Apr 3, 2012  Student Photographer
I was just thinking that it'd be nice to have the ability to delete deviations from the gallery page like you can with favorites. I'm currently in the process of deleting some deviations one-by-one; it gets a little "ugh" when you have to go to each individual deviation. And then after you delete it you get redirected to your profile. It's kind of time-consuming and sorta frustrating.

If this is at all possible able to happen I'd be pretty happy. Thanks. :)

I like the notion of listing the date of the most recent edit of a deviation, but the listing of the date of its first posting should also remain.

Here is a suggestion i was thinking about: figure out a way to filter through the Critiqu-able submissions. There is SOOO many different kinds of artwork in there, that I have to scroll through 5 pages of the types of art that i don't have the knowledge/context have nothing to say about, before i find the type of art I can responsibly and happily critique.
I have no idea if this has ever been discussed before--so i apologize if it has been already...

I have something that isn't really a bug but an idea, do you think it'd be possible to add a 'Confirm?' pop-up when you cancel or click the 'X' if you are writing something using the 'Add Text...' feature in the 'Submit Art' area? I just lost a few hours of work because I hit cancel instead of show preview, and I think it'd be helpful to prevent anybody else from making the same mistake....

uhm...I dont know what is going on. But suddenly i get 5 Huge Thumbnails on a "display folder" widget. I choose for 1 big thumbnail in my settings and now i have 5....Its also on my favorites display.
I must say that i am not that happy with it. Its a cool thing to add and nice to have but can it be a choice? That you can change your settings again to 1 big thumbnail?
    Thanks ^^

p.s. it would be awesome if this is going to be a new setting ^^
