In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

New deviantART Mobile Site (Beta Testers Only)

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we just launched a brand new version of the mobile site to Beta Testers! The new site is compatible with mobile browsers on the iPhone and Android phones and we'd love to hear your feedback!

Try the new mobile site by upgrading to a Premium Membership and becoming a Beta Tester.

Change Log

  • The Wallpaper link in the main menu led to a broken page in some browsers. Fixed by $allixsenos
  • The Share tool for Facebook occasionally failed to fetch pages correctly for some deviations/users. Fixed by $drommk
  • Sta.sh login was briefly unavailable. Fixed by $allixsenos
  • The Edit button at the top of user Portfolios was barely visible. Fixed by $DEVlANT
  • Super Group upgrades were unavailable over the weekend. Fixed by $allixsenos
  • Ads on some deviation pages very briefly caused issues with the display for those deviations. Fixed by $drommk
  • After the previously mentioned changes to moderation report notifications were implemented, issues were discovered regarding the ability of the user who filed the ticket to communicate with the Help Desk over tickets that required further information. This issue has since been taken care of. Fixed by $DEVlANT
  • The displayed total for withdrawn user profits was not accurate under some rare conditions. Fixed by $KnightAR

deviantART muro

  • Files were not properly saved (or sometimes did not prompt to save) when a user left the page. Fixed by $mudimba
  • The smudge brush could overuse CPU, leading to crashed browsers on some systems. Fixed by $mudimba
  • Fixed error detection and user notification of certain save errors caused by intermittent network connectivity. Fixed by $mudimba

Sta.sh

  • If a user didn't agree to the submission agreement on first upload, the page title would be set to "undefined". Fixed by $kouiskas
  • When opening a stack in a new tab from the "View" button, the new tab would load the topmost item instead of the stack. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Opening a page containing many items, viewing an item shortly after opening that page, then going back to the root/folder could result in many items disappearing from view. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • After arrow-navigation or editing an item, the title and description on items would become unclickable. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • When viewing a public stack, clicking on the title would open two pages. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Custom PCP licenses wouldn't save upon pressing Save & Exit. Fixed by $samshull
  • All settings related to publishing an item to dA (downloadability, sharing, critique, resizing, category, etc.) are no longer displayed on or applied to Sta.sh items. These settings become effective once the piece is published to deviantART. Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Any journal CSS rule that takes a color value can now use an RGBA value. Fixed by $Alisey
  • The sidebar now looks cleaner when loading screens, and has a loading indicator. Fixed by $inazar
  • Opening the Journal Extras box in Writer wouldn't adjust the height of the Writer box. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Contents of the deviantWATCH list were breaking out from the Friends dropdown. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Some skinned journals were rendering off the left edge of the screen. Fixed by $Alisey
  • The "Upload Files" button in the sidebar would sometimes jump to the left when clicked. Fixed by $inazar

Your Feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's Site Update!
  • Feedback regarding More Like This was mostly positive, though much like on the beta launch article, there were concerns voiced regarding Endless Scrolling.
  • All of the member suggestions included last week were met with positivity! In particular, many users liked the suggestion about being able to list what tools were used to create art when submitting. =overseer mentioned that having an "Other" option for less commonly used tools would be helpful, as well.
Last week, deviants suggested:
  • A selection/magic wand tool for deviantART muro. Suggested by ~Spottedpath45
  • Formatting tools for comments on site. Suggested by ~NaesOne
  • Limiting Group join request to one at a time per Group, so that Group admins don't have to deal with duplicate requests. Suggested by *Yoriden150
  • An easier way to display the other websites they actively use on their profile. Suggested by ~VerticalForklift
  • Increase the maximum amount of Correspondence messages displayed at one time in the Message Center. Suggested by *Championx91
  • Better sorting for Correspondence messages, including sorting by pending, accepted, and declined. Suggested by =CoconutSky

Discuss!

Mention Notifications
You can use the :devusername: code to easily link to a member's profile anywhere on deviantART. However, there is no indication for a member when they are mentioned elsewhere on site, so unless they happen on it themselves, it could go completely unnoticed. This feature could also be helpful when you want to bring another member into a discussion. Would you like the option to be notified if a user mentioned you in a comment, journal, or forum thread? If not, why would you be opposed to it?

Honestly, this does not work for me. None of my mobile devices can acccess da in any way now and I much preferred the old mobile browser. I don't expect much consideration but I've read others comments and I do believe my feelings have been expressed by many others. I just kinda wished you could somehow have both because this new thing probably works well for the beta testers, whoever they are, and I wouldn't want you to take that away from them, not that you would. It's just that as da frequenter, this is somewhat of a headache not being able to casual answer comments on the go like before.

With utmost hope and no disrespect.

I believe the tagging idea is pretty great, and I've wondered why it hasn't been in use in the first place. It can save people from having to comment with a link to whatever you tagged them to, and it would be a nice time saver, if it's possible to implement.

Also, does the mobile site have a specific address you can type in? The only "mobile" device I use is my DSi; it has so much trouble loading the regular site, and I don't know how to switch to the mobile site, because from what I've read, the site automatically switches to a mobile interface when you access it from a phone, though that could be wrong.

Can I ask for more information on why a third thumbnail option (after Huge Wall and Huge Grid) would be so difficult or complex?

I've been looking into it and it's just CSS properties. I'm practically a CSS newbie and it's been straightforward enough fixing my folders. You guys could surely make a unique style sheet for every option and be able to tweak them within minutes.

Gimme back the old thumbnails! The new ones suck. You lousy admins keep ignoring us. The people who give you money for points, cake, and premiums! And yet you don't listen. We the people of dA demand small thumbnails! And we will fight until you listen!

I am trying to be patient,.. it becomes difficult, when the same problem continues to occur. Sta.sh is what I am making reference to. I pay for the service, so why can I not rely on it being there, when I have need of it. It doesn't matter if a thousand people used it before me and had not problems, what matters is when I want to use it, it doesn't cycle through and stash the image, it freezes up, or simply is not working ("Service Unavailable"). Can someone PLEASE get this fixed, once and for all?

Here's a quote from $HAL2008
"Unfortunately we're unable to provide both the new thumbnails and the legacy thumbnails side-by-side due to the fact that it would require quite a bit of development resources, and technological resources, to maintain and run the two systems side-by-side."

Oh god, now the thumbs display the number of comments. Is this a new thing? I'm pretty sure it wasn't there before.

My comment for the staffer whose been copy pasting replies about thumbs: I bet you guys could free up a few resources if you stopped trying to turn this place into the new facebook.

Plus, if some Stylish script written by one guy can fix the thumbs for those of us with Chrome, I seriously doubt it would be too much of a strain on dA's resources to come up with their own.

Hiya! The number of comments have displayed for a long time, even with the old thumbnails. As far as your comparison to the Stylish script goes, keep in mind that the Stylish script only has to work for one user on one computer, and is based in the browser itself, where for us to actively support a way to change between the old and new thumbnails would require us maintaining two different layouts of the site for over 23 million users at once. It's much more complicated than you're making it out to be. :)

Really? Guess it's all the extra scrutiny, because I've totally never noticed before (though now that i have, not sure i like it. seeing large numbers of comments makes me not want to even click on it).

Can I ask how the support for big or small thumbs is different than support for the wall or grid options? Wouldn't it just be a bit of code saying if this option is clicked, then thumbs are displayed at X dimensions, otherwise they will be displayed at Y dimensions.

Something's up with the mature content filter.

I'm not seeing any mature content when I search for something. My mature content filter is on, but that's because I don't want gore and explicit porn to catch me off guard when I browse. I used to be able to see deviations with mature content while browsing; they'd have a warning thumbnail and I would be able to go to the deviation and look if I was interested. But now I'm not seeing anything at all.

This is disappointing, because I've found mature work I like while browsing, and I don't want to miss out on something completely just because the work contains swearing or a little tasteful nudity. And I don't want to turn my filter off and get bombarded with blood and porn again. Can this be fixed?

Oh yes almost forgot - on the deviation pages we can see who favourited our deviations but we can't see who downloaded the images - is it possible to make this visible in the same way as the favourites? would be nice to know who downloads my art and for people who make stock it would be an easier way of keeping track of who might use their stock for something.

I'd love to see a group feature where you can send notes anonymously. Like in not showing the person who wrote the note but just the groups name.
I guess it's a nice attempt to show some professionality and also unity among the groups and their admins, over all it would be very useful!
