In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

New Sta.sh Writer Toolbar
Formatting in Sta.sh Writer just got easier! Check out the brand new Writer toolbar, which includes new functionality such as adding lists, links, and text alignment! Though these formatting styles worked in the previous version of Writer, they could only be used if you manually typed in the HTML or copy and pasted from another application.

Your Feedback

  • Once a deviation has been submitted to a Group's gallery folder, admins should be able to redirect the deviation to another folder rather than rejecting it and asking them to submit to the appropriate category. From =The--Last--Hope

Discuss!  Lightbulb

Last week we received some great feedback from members about Group Messages. We'd like to hear more about Groups!
  1. Groups profile widget: Currently, in the Groups profile widget, we display the Groups you're an admin or member of. How would you feel if Groups you are watching were also listed on this widget?
  2. Stacks in message counts: In the messages menu, the number of deviantWATCH messages you have refers to individual messages. If you have stacks enabled, would you prefer it if this number counted stacks rather than individual messages?
  3. Splinter menu vs. unsplintered menu: In the top navigation of deviantART, do you use the "splinter" version of the messages dropdown (where each message type gets its own link in the header), or do you use the "unsplintered" version of the menu (where all messages are consolidated under the messages dropdown)? Why do you prefer that version over the other?
  4. Group messages and notes: Currently, on the splinter version of the messages menu, Group messages and notes are listed under the dropdown. Would you prefer it if Group messages and notes were splintered out as well and not hidden under the dropdown? Suggestions originally from =XxMasquradexX and ~Ni3nk3

I prefer the unsplintered menu, as I only get on dA for a few minutes every other week at the moment, I like being able to know at a glance whether I have any 'personal' messages (such as comments or replies), which I try to reply to promptly, or whether it's just deviations, which I can come back to at a later date. :)

As an amendment, I didn't actually notice the principal difference between the two menus, I didn't actually know that was an option. Looking at the pic above, I would most likely prefer the splintered menu. :)

I've noticed that when using the Sta.sh writer that it crowds the paragraphs together after I preview...

So
I end up
with paragraphs
looking like this!

Is there something I'm missing? I've tried the text alignment options but it doesn't fix it. It's annoying, anybody know how to fix this? I'll be avoiding Sta.sh because of this. It makes it impossible to read prose.

has anyone else had the problem when you try to submit something you wrote, it defaults to journal and doesn't give you a choice to get out of it?? i'm seriously getting frustrated with it...also, is there a way to have the preview be a picture instead of the actual writing?

YES!! I second this!! I want to have my thumbnail be a picture of a commission I had done instead of the actual writing. Why isn't there an option for this in Sta.sh writer? :(

DX i don't know!! but you can put a picture into the actual writing part...but when you try and upload it, it only gives you the choice of being a journal... :tears:

Yes, I've tried that. You can put pictures in the actual text, but the problem with that is that no one sees it in the thumbnail previews, which is kinda the whole point because most of my readers see my stuff via group icons. So I'd want them to click on it when they saw it posted in a group. If you put the artwork in your actual writing, people would still see it, but they'd have to click on the thumbnail before they'd be able to view it.

I don't know why it is so complicated for Sta.sh Writer to have this feature if the old system was able to have it.

Just a suggestions
It would be nice in sta.sh when you are choosing thumbs to place in new articles, if we had the ability to add thumbs from groups we are admins of or something to that effect. It would be a whole lot quicker and easier  Thanks for listening :aww:

1.Groups profile widget: Sure :D

2.Stacks in message counts: Individual messages.

3.Splinter menu vs. unsplintered menu: I like the spinter menu. Since I have a lot of things on my DevWatch, I like to take a quick peek and see how much is watched stuff and what is other things.'

4.Group messages and notes: Seems pretty cool. I'm not an admin in any busy groups. But admins of bust groups would probably need it.

Suggestions:
-Search bar in Favorites. It get annoying when browsing someone's favorites and you can't find it. Also, if you're adding some of your favorites into a newly made folder, you won't have to go through your whole favorites.

-Subfolders. No one wants to go through a folder just to find art from a certain thing (Ex. A Bases folder might be the main folder. It's subfoldes would be "Female Bases", "Male Bases" and "Animal Bases".)

Before DA can allow searches in faves/notes/other areas that don't have it but need it, they have to upgrade their search system. They are aware that a lot of people want to see those features though, they aren't ignoring it. [link]

Subfolders are technically possible if you're willing to get a little creative with custom gallery icons. Check out my "resources" folder in my favorites to see what I mean. It would be nice to see them made official though.

Groups profile widget: Currently, in the Groups profile widget, we display the Groups you're an admin or member of. How would you feel if Groups you are watching were also listed on this widget?

i agree with those who say no, make it a separate widget

Stacks in message counts: In the messages menu, the number of deviantWATCH messages you have refers to individual messages. If you have stacks enabled, would you prefer it if this number counted stacks rather than individual messages?

the latter, because in the sidebar it shows as stacks as well.

Splinter menu vs. unsplintered menu: In the top navigation of deviantART, do you use the "splinter" version of the messages dropdown (where each message type gets its own link in the header), or do you use the "unsplintered" version of the menu (where all messages are consolidated under the messages dropdown)? Why do you prefer that version over the other?

unsplintered, less of a footprint on the menu-bar

Group messages and notes: Currently, on the splinter version of the messages menu, Group messages and notes are listed under the dropdown. Would you prefer it if Group messages and notes were splintered out as well and not hidden under the dropdown? Suggestions originally from =XxMasquradexX and ~Ni3nk3

whichever is less complicated

another suggestion while we are on the topic of groups would be a per-member exception to folder limits and perhaps a 'vip membership' class that has separate privileges from regular members, but no admin rights.

1.Groups profile widget: Aside from the fact that I haven't figured out where that particular function is, that would be a nice function to add. Maybe add a divisor bar to differentiate between them (putting the watched groups below the groups belonged to)?

2.Stacks in message counts: I'd rather have the messages counted than the stacks.

3.Splinter menu vs. unsplintered menu: I prefer the splintered because I have a ton of deviations to look through (getting to messages is a little tedious when it's grouped together with the deviations).

4.Group messages and notes: I'm not an admin of a group, so it doesn't apply to me.

As for the splintering of the menu, I too am in favor of having the group message icon be a separate entity, rather than hidden in a drop down menu.

Here's an idea, have a group message icon that drops down to show the number of messages for each group. This way, it is easier to keep track of several groups instead of landing to the default group just to click your way to the other groups. The group message icon in the splintered menu could show the total number of messages, while the separate groups in the drop down show the number of messages for that group.

There's already a good scriptmonkey script out there that does this, and it works pretty well. I'd really like to see this officially implemented.

Sometimes, if I have more than 24 images, and I scroll through all of them, it won't let me scroll to the 25th image. I have to go to all images, click on "Next Page" and start to scroll again. Why does this happen?

I think founder(s) and/or co-founders of a group should be notified when somebody comments on a group journal entry. I know I have trouble with not knowing when somebody comments on a journal featured in my groups, and I have to keep checking back after I submit them.

Loose suggestion: Vote for a feature.
Adobe has set up something like this for Photoshop. People suggest ideas and then people vote on if they like the idea and if they like the idea, there is a higher likelihood it will get done.

Groups profile widget: Currently, in the Groups profile widget, we display the Groups you're an admin or member of. How would you feel if Groups you are watching were also listed on this widget?
If you do this, separate it by at least an HR line with groups owned at the top. I prefer no, at this point considering that some people are random group collectors.

Stacks in message counts: In the messages menu, the number of deviantWATCH messages you have refers to individual messages. If you have stacks enabled, would you prefer it if this number counted stacks rather than individual messages?
Individual messages.

Splinter.

Group messages and notes: Currently, on the splinter version of the messages menu, Group messages and notes are listed under the dropdown. Would you prefer it if Group messages and notes were splintered out as well and not hidden under the dropdown?
Screw that, I'm still waiting for the Group message bug you have to be fixed. (You have one group message, but 5 groups and have no idea where that group message is coming from, if you click "group message" in your messages it brings you to your first listed group, but not the one that has the messages.) Stack those suckers in my messages (So I don't have 10+ (One to click the menu, one to click the group, sometimes one more to click "more groups", then if I can't find the message, then 10+ more clicks.) clicks to find one message and have to "feel the force of the DA") by group OR at least let me know *which* group the message is coming from. That's poor user experience. (I feel even worse for those who have 6 groups...) Once you do that (saving me 10 clicks) *then* worry about splintering, which is icing. Eliminating clicks with organization==good user experience. 10+ click to get to one objective=/=good user experience.

Still waiting for the "Edit this journal entry" on the Deviant art page favorites. Look, I mocked it up for you! [link] Copy-paste is not that hard. Steal your own code... you do it for group journals... makes absolutely no sense why you can't do it for deviant's journals.

Another suggestion, How about a feedback widget for commissions? Options for buyers and sellers, like.. how quickly it was completely, cost and buyer-seller interaction?

I think that would be nice.

We need to be able to edit previous literature submissions with sta.sh writer. I shouldn't have to re-submit my literature pieces just in order to give them a background. :)

Also, I am currently completely unable to make links in sta.sh, even by copying the html. :(

As for the group widget on our page, it would be awesome if we could actually have a"priority section" on the groups widget (even if just for premium members) so we can display the groups we want to more prominently.

Hi.
I like the idea that admins of a group is able to redirect the deviation to another folder when a deviation is submitted to a incorrect one.
And i want to suggest to change something in the Group messages area, to change the Comment button to just open a chat box like in the others feedback messages.

Subfolders for faves! I :+fav: really much so it would be nice to have for example one gallery for 'video game fan art' and there all subfolders for example ' Super Mario', 'Zelda' and 'Metroid'. Now it is quite difficult to look at the :+fav:s if you have really many different folders.

Basically, just create your subfolders as you would a regular folder and name it what you want. Then create a link to it in what you want to be the main folder. Once you've done that, go into a program such as photoshop and create a one pixel by 150 pixel canvas. Paint it the color of the background of the folders list and save it. Then add that blank icon as the icon for your subfolders. This will hide them from view and make it so that pretty much the only way to access it is to go through the one you have as your main folder which creates the illusion of having subfolders.
