In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

A Preview of deviantART's New Thumbnails
The current deviantART thumbnails (the smaller versions of deviations) have served the community well for years; however, there's always room for improvement. We've created a new style of thumbnail, which hopes to solve the problems with the current thumbnails.

Read more about the new thumbnails and find out how you can preview them.

Comment Business Cards
On a site like deviantART where tens of thousands of comments can occur in one conversation, this addition hopes to add some extra information and context to the conversation. On each comment, we now display whether or not the member is a new member, as well as their basic information like age, sex, country, and artist type.

The visibility of this information matches the settings of your profile (if you hide your age on your profile, it'll be hidden on your business card). You can adjust the visibility of your age and sex in the "Personal Information" section of your general account settings. Your country and artist type can be modified using the deviantID widget on your profile.

Remove from Favourites
In the past Site Updates, many people have requested that it be easier to remove deviations from your Favourites, rather than having to go to each of the deviation pages. We just added a "Remove from Favourites" option to the pencil menu of your Favourites that will make managing them a bit easier.

Download Sta.sh Stack as .ZIP
A few weeks ago, we released the ability to download a Sta.sh stack as a ZIP to Beta Testers. The feature has now been rolled out to everyone.

You can now download an entire Sta.sh stack all at once in an easy to access .ZIP file. Whether you're sharing images with friends or co-workers, collaborating on a piece, or if you simply want a quick and easy way to get to your files from a different location, it can now be done even faster and with one click of a button. The "Download All" button is located at the bottom of a Sta.sh stack.

All Deviants Can Now Write Critiques
Sometimes you come across a deviation that deserves special attention. It catches your eye in such a way that you're compelled to craft a response that goes above and beyond a normal comment. Or perhaps a fellow deviant is having a tough time with a particular aspect of their work, and you know just what they need to take their art to the next level.

For these situations and more, we've given everyone the ability to write a Critique.

Community Projects Gallery Changes (Part 1)
We've made some changes to the structure of the "Holidays" category under "Community Projects."

Bug Fixes

General
  • The list of "Recent Blogs" for each group listed in the Groups Portal was not updating. Fixed by muteor
  • Journal thumbnails were briefly broken in IE8. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Various display issues were fixed with the Slideshow button. Fixed by muteor
  • User gallery browsing by category was broken for non-leaf categories. Fixed by lendrick
  • The "Send A Note" modal ignored members' Mature Content settings and displayed Mature Content thumbs anyway. Fixed by muteor
  • Fixed some issues with the layout of the footer for narrow browser widths. Fixed by lendrick
  • Journal publishing preview ignored the specified heights of an image. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Some links to the Points terms of service information were broken, and information itself needed an updated style. Fixed by muteor
  • The "Give Points" modal sometimes thought it was a llama modal. Fixed by ZombieCoder
  • The Bolt award, an annual award given to staff, received a visual uplift to its widget. Fixed by shadowhand
  • The list of categories in the submission process included a few categories that would redirect deviations to the more suitable "Scraps" section of your gallery. This caused confusion among members and has been frequently requested to be removed. We've removed these categories to eliminate confusion. Read more about this change.
  • There was a bug interfering with the right mouse click button while using the Basic Brush. Fixed by mudimba
  • When dragging an item or stack, the page now scrolls along. Fixed by samshull
  • The login form was missing labels in IE8. Fixed by samshull
  • Hovercards on Sta.sh items no longer appear when dragging to select multiple items. Fixed by samshull
  • The "flat" view in Sta.sh, which showed you all of your items without stacks, was removed because of the lack of usage. We feel that this mode was unnecessary and provided little benefit to members.
  • If there is an error with the inputted CSS of a Journal Skin in Writer, you no longer lose your changes after seeing this error. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • The CSS declarations "text-shadow" and "box-shadow" are now properly validated in skins. Fixed by kemayo
  • Various bugs were fixed with the new HTML improvements available to Beta Testers. Writer no longer has any issues displaying the text  "<3" or any other non-HTML tags. Writer no longer breaks self-closing HTML tags which use a trailing slash like img tags. Fixed by kemayo and Alisey
  • No more prolonged display of ugly broken image thumbs when uploading to Sta.sh through Writer. Fixed by kemayo
  • Writer only renders manually entered HTML code if we recognize the HTML tag entered. Fixed by kemayo
  • Writer entries which are too long will now give an error message explaining this, rather than just "unknown error". Fixed by kemayo
  • Dragging a file onto Writer while another sidebar section is open no longer results in the Sta.sh section overlapping the other one. Fixed by kemayo
  • Thumbnails in Writer are now more consistent with thumbnails in published entries. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback
  • In widgets on profiles, all deviations should be able to have a "full view" mode, rather than just images under 900 pixels by 900 pixels. From *AngelicDragonPuppy
  • In deviantART muro, there should be an option to flip a layer horizontally or vertically without flipping the whole canvas itself. From deKirbyGal
  • After favouriting an artist's artwork, it should show you other images that members also liked from the artist. From Vexcel
  • Add the option to easily use your own art from your gallery, scraps, or Sta.sh as your avatar. From =KissTheSunrise
  • Create a system where you can see the activity of the people you're watching, such as the artwork they favourited, commented on, or artists they've added to their watch. From `Gwendolyn12 in the Suggestions Forum

Discuss these ideas! Lightbulb
  • Related artwork on deviation pages. ~YoukosForbiddenLove suggested a feature that would show related artwork on deviation pages. For example, if you viewed a photo of the Eiffel Tower, you would see other photos of the Eiffel Tower. It's important for deviantART members to be exposed to new artists. This feature could encourage others to discover new artwork and would increase the visibility of your artwork to people who might be interested in it.
  • Macro gallery changes. We're looking for feedback about changes to the macro gallery. Please leave your feedback on that article.

Why do you take off the country from business card x_x that's actually the only thing i care about from this business card thing. It's easier for me to expand local connection that way, coming across people from my country.

I think this is a bad idea: "Create a system where you can see the activity of the people you're watching, such as the artwork they favourited, commented on, or artists they've added to their watch."

I personally like my space, and I don't want that to interfere with it.

Still having problems with dropping thumbs into writer. It worked for a short stink where the thumbs would remain as a thumb size. Now each piece I drop I have to change the size back to a thumb. It's really kept me from doing any features at all because it's so time consuming. This has been on ongoing issue for me :(

"Related artwork on deviation pages"

HECK NO! It's intrusive and creepy.

This isn't Facebook. It doesn't need Facebook-like structure. I deleted my Facebook profile over their lack of adequate privacy control. I really don't want to have to do that to my DeviantART account too, I enjoy it here.

I don't like your suggestion, =Tophthetomboy =/ I don't want more art popping up everytime I favourite something. It would be a way for DA to keep people on the site for longer, and get them to see more things, but I don't like that excess of self-advertising. I like DA more friendly, less addictive.=)

Some of these changes are very cool. Like the fact that now everyone can write critiques and all images have a full view option. However there are a few I really don't like. I don't really care for the thumbnails versions as they are now, and that they display how many comments something has. Nor did I like the business comment cards that displayed that much information. It was overloading, annoying, and honestly I can't see how knowing someone's location, gender, ect. would help provide context to anything going on. I'm glad those are gone and I truly hope they stay that way.

this isn't facebook, and the more popular artists really do need privacy. the internet can be a place for real creepers. there aren't that many people on this site that actually KNOW each other. while yes, friendships are made and what not, there is just something to be said for distance.
its just generally a bad idea, and if you ask all of the deviants i'm sure you'll get a similar reaction.

So many great updates lately! =D
I have to bow down and congratulate you for a job well done :worship:

I do have a suggestion though, which I hope will be considered =)
The ability to edit a whole stack in stash at the same time.
By editing all at the same time they all get the same title (hopefully with the ability to get them automatically numbered 1, 2, 3 +) or use the uploaded title (though sometimes it ends up "Untitled" for some reason.. ), give them one description, one set of keywords and add them all to the same category as easy and fast as if you are simply adding one image.
Any images not conforming to the set should then be edited separately like normal before submitting them.
This would save a whole lot of time if you are a stock artist (though others might have sets too, like angles of the same sculpture and so on)
Once edited using this method it should be possible to submit them all in one click too, but maybe make an automatic delay of 30 seconds so they can be posted on the front page like normal without owning the page with 20 images in a row ;)

Oh!! I've had a suggestion (: It's only small, I only just noticed and I have NO idea why its not there o:

When writing journal entries:
Mood
Current Mood: Select Mood Love reset mood
Listening to: Playing:
Reading: Eating:
Watching: Drinking:

Have a box for 'working on' or 'drawing' ... I'd always have something to put in there :P I'd be more inclined to fill it out, cause often I'm not watching, eating, drinking or playing anything.. I mean its not exactly common for people to be writing a journal and watching something and playing something at the same time really...

You know what I just thought? That doing these business card things, if you must, would be better beside our names on our deviations. I mean, you can be on the page of a person's art and wonder if they speak English or not, things like that, and it's less...troll-inspiring than on the comments. It's more relevant.

I do not see how a person's age, nationality or so on are relevant to a comment. I am not adverse to people seeing this information on my profile where it is relevant . I don't know why anyone would request this feature. It seems to me that features are being added for the sake of adding new features.

As these journals always seem like an open forum to suggest improvements, may I make a suggestion:

Notify us of all comments left under our deviations please! At the moment we're not!

I made a thread in 'suggestions' to fully explain this: [link]

When someone leaves a comment on one of your deviations and then someone else writes a reply to that comment the owner of the deviation is not notified of this extra comment and it doesn't show up in their message center. I think the owner should be informed as after all, the comment is going to be shown under their work! :)

Why not implement the idea of 'liking' or 'rating' comments? Much like Facebook or Youtube? It would generate a lot more feedback messages, but you could always turn those off [default]?

This could honestly turn out horribly, really fast. Newgrounds has a similar feature and most of the time when someone leaves a nice and constructive comment it's often unfairly voted down simply because "they said something bad about this game booo." Also it'd lead to a lot of immature YouTube comments coming here :ohnoes: Having an on/off system kinda defeats the whole purpose of even having it, and to be honest, most people here have been asking for dA to not become more like other social sites. Because that's not what dA is.

"Create a system where you can see the activity of the people you're watching, such as the artwork they favourited, commented on, or artists they've added to their watch."

please no ^^" At least make it optional. Some artists don'T really use the 'social site' function, it is sometimes hard to keep track of the existing watch information. This would make a complete chaos.
Also, privacy matters: some of us have enough stalkers already...

I think we should have a simplified site ones can go to. For instance, I'd like to reply to messages from my phone, but it refuses to bring up mobile!DA (If you guys even do that anymore) But it's not an advanced enough phone to be able to bring up the messages in this kind of way. I'd love for you guys to do a 'simple/Classic' site mode for slower computers or phones or people who just don't want to put up with all of this new stuff every time they turn around.

I think that you should allow people to look thru more comments; I mean, I know that I love to read back on old RP's I have with friends, though it's a bit difficult to do so when I can only see limited comments. :) Could you maybe make it so that if you click on (1 reply), it can show you the whole comment thread of the RP (or the two people conversinsg?); I think it would be cool.
Or if you couldn't do that, then maybe make it 200-600 comments? (I know that it goes from 5-10-25-50-100, but more options would be nice!)

Thank you for reading and I hope that you take this into consideration/add this. <3

I do really love the business card option, I also like the displays of comments on a deviation under thumbnails! (As well as being able to see which folder the deviation is in while looking through the gallery.)

One thing I would LOVE to see is the ability to add a folder within a folder in your own gallery like groups are allowed to do. (If we can do this, and I'm just not able to find it like an idiot, let me know please!)

For example: If I made a folder for commissions, I'd like to put folders inside splitting them up by style and price! Or If I had a fan art folder, I'd like to put folders in for each show/game/book etc.

I do not like the new comment business cards. While I don't mind that information being available, it seems wrong that it is the preface to every comment I make. I do not want my comment to be judged based on my age, nationality, gender, or artistic specialty before the person even has a chance to read what I have to say. It would even seem better to me if that information was at the end of my comment rather than at the beginning, though that still doesn't seem like the best way to me. I thought the original suggestion was for this information to come up when hovering (over the users icon and/or username?). I'd prefer it if the information would come up on hover. Then the person can see more about me if they want to (as if they were checking my profile), but it is not shoved in their face at the start of my comment.

Is it possible to make watched deviation stacks open in new tabs? There's no need for a button-option to do that, but could you make the stacks compatible with open-in-new-tab shortcuts (like clicking with the mouse wheel)?

Of course, when I try to do that with the current stacks, what opens in the new tab is still the main messages menu.

...hoping that made sense, and thanks. I tend to open lots of tabs on my browser, and this would make it a lot easier to check on stacks. :)

I don't know if this is an update or what, but why are the deviant watches not in 'folders' anymore?? Like, I can't just choose to see one deviant's art from the past however many days, I have to scroll through all of the new posts to find that one person. :/
It really sucks because of the groups. Like, I get 100 new deviations a day from them, and sometimes I don't want to see them all.
