What's New

Coming Soon: New Sta.sh Submit
Beta testers are currently trying out the new submission process for Sta.sh, deviantART's upload and publishing platform. This new version includes a simplified and tidier interface that makes it easier to understand and use. The feedback on this new process has been very positive, so we will be rolling it out to all members early next week. If you'd like to try it out early, upgrade to a Premium Membership and enable Beta Testing in your Account Settings.

UPDATED (APRIL 30): The new Sta.sh submission process is now live for all members! To try it out, visit your Sta.sh!

New Thumbnails (Beta Testers Only)
Just over a month ago, we released a preview of deviantART's new thumbnails. Since then, we've been tweaking the display of the thumbnails based on community feedback. Beta testers are now testing the new thumbnails throughout the site, including browse, search, galleries, and favourites.

I really dislike the Stash submission form. Personally I'd prefer was the same as the regular submission form. :[ The description box is very narrow and difficult to type in, and the preview icon is hovering over the scroll bar so it's difficult to get to a to a specific line to edit it.

The new thumbnails don't work when one has a gallery folder skin in place, makes everything quite displaced.
I have a large laptop so thumbnails aren't an issue to seeing them in this new format, but it looks a bit messy from my perspective.

Could there perhaps be a queue option in St.ash please? It would save the time and trouble of having to submit deviations manually, one at a time.

I just tried out the new sta.sh submit, and it's very buggy. I don't think your army of 13-year-old beta testers is quite cutting it (I don't mean to be rude to the beta-testers that ARE doing their job, it's just that I see a lot of little rugrats with a = beside their username that I know are probably not doing their job).

It won't keep spaces between sentences. For example, I'll type something, hit return, and do so more, and it will "save" the progress when I click away to another window or tab....and it'll all turn into a block of text. Spaces are kept, new paragraphs are not. It also does not display :bulletblue: in preview mode, and possibly doesn't display other emotes. I haven't tried. It also doesn't display some special characters (I put a male symbol into the text, and it reverted to its code, and won't show up as what it should be in the preview--just like : bulletblue : didn't.
I don't know if there are other issues...I got too frustrated with it, and quit trying. The new way looks nice, but is too buggy for me to deal with at the present time if I don't have to do so.

Also, irrelevant to the former topic but still important, is there a way to turn off scrolling through messages with the left and right arrows? I hate this because I often accidentally hit < or > instead of up or down, and with dial-up...it becomes a nightmare. So a way to disable it, if it exists, would make my life easier.

Even though it'll be easier to see the devitations bigger, it still glitches on my phone and other phones. I kinda think it needs to be fixed! It doesn't show the thumbnail all the way!

I wrote up a lit piece in St.ash writer and submitted it via Sta.sh (ditto on the formatting issue someone mentioned but I saw the response. ;)) I saw in my message center that someone faved this piece, but when I looked at the stats on on the deviation it shows 0. The fav came in over 14 hours ago so it's not like I'm being over-eager. :lmao:

I really wanted to like the thumbnails. I do like how they look, but as I said in a previous comment, they are too big for my screen and I can only view two rows of art at a time. In addition, I have discovered over the past several days that the thumbs are too big for practicality purposes too. Something about the nature of the big thumbs makes it harder to drag and select several at once - something I do daily when choosing artwork to feature in my groups, or when organizing the galleries and subgalleries at #DD-Catalogue. It's just harder to select thumbs accurately without accidentally clicking on the piece or highlighting irrelevant stuff. Please at least improve this functionality before extending the big thumbs to all members.

I'd prefer it if you'd let the CV's pick 2 or more DDs a day again. It gives a chance for more people to get exposure to their art. They're flooded with suggestions, and they also want to feature some more art.

Text formatting on Sta.sh doesn't behave, period.

Also. The Dark Shadow ads. They're annoying. Everytime I try to fave something, it covers my folders in the drop-down. :grump:

If you find specific formatting that doesn't work, please report it to the Help Desk and explain it in detail so that it can be recreated and fixed. Formatting is complicated -- especially making it work between each browser. So if you find specific bugs, please let us know! Thanks! :)

The thumnails are ok by me, having taken a couple of days to try them out.

I like the zooming in on tall or wide images - One small thing that could be looked at - I've noticed thumbnails that are just a little bit over the 'crop in margin' so what you get is a sliver cut off them bottom and the image looks smaller than all the others on the page. So if it's destined to be cropped I think it'd be better to crop it more and make the thumbnail slightly bigger, never cropped a small amount - know what I mean?

I like the general size of the thumbnails overall including the literature ones. The way it organises them on the page however is awkward. More often than not I end up with a lone thumbnail on it's own row at the bottom. I think something should be done about this before this feature's general release.

And lastly, a general wonderment, would it look tidier if the thumbnails were justified? The ragged right feels odd..

I have a suggestion when viewing someone's work could the more from ~whateveruser..... feature on the side, could the work be more related to the current piece we are viewing., by matching it with keywords or same catergory.

I also think a suggested fav. or suggested watch feature would be nice. where you fav. an artwork or watch a person and it will give you suggestions... people who fav this also faved this( within the same user's gallery or not)... or people who watched this people also watched.... and if possible the feature could be turned on/off... as im sure some people would get annoyed by it.

I just used the new stash. I thought that it was ok before and no it just seems really complicated . I can't really go to the main editing screen unless I click the "choose category" option. If I hadn't figured that out, I would've just sat there thinking, "how do I edit this?"

Also, my biggest issue seems to be the description box. For some reason it won't let me use some HTML coding (the one that lets me make icons and links) and the fact that I can't preview it isn't that good. Basically, when I try to use HTML, I just get a bunch of extra stuff and everything looks like a hot mess. It also doesn't add spaces between paragraphs. It just combines everything into one big paragraph.

Probably the only good thing about this new stash is that you can choose which of your galleries to put you new art in.

Could you please fix this? Or go back to the old stash? I really liked it, but now it seems more unappealing.

Well, I used to love Sta.sh. Now I don't. This new version seems a lot less intuitive and more complicated/tedious if you ask me. Before, ALL the options were right there on the side of the same page when you selected the 'edit and submit' view - nice and easy to change without it switching to a different view.

When I first saw this new version it appeared as though I couldn't even change anything because the options that were previously on the side are GONE and there is nothing obviously showing me how to get at them. It also appears less obvious that you can click into the title and descriptions fields to edit. I stumbled upon the other options when I went to select the category - which then took me to this other page with the options - but that seems like adding an extra step and making it a lot harder to just change the options I want to change - like adding my keywords or changing the full view size. How is this better?????? Before it was all right there on one page in plain sight and easy to select with a simple click.

The lack of 'save' buttons in general makes me nervous. Like when I want to go back to stash - it used to say 'save and exit to stash' now it's just that little stash-icon tab thingy which makes me wonder if I'm just exiting, or if this is actually saved.

I really dislike the tiny text-field for the artist's comment section - particularly the lack of the preview and save buttons. While the typing space does expand if I write a lot in it, it seems to have some issues doing so, so that at first it looks like my words have just been cut off after a couple of lines and I have to stop and use the arow keys to get the text on the next line to show. This is annoying as well.

Yeah, this totally sucks. Having to click on the category selection in order to get to any of the other options is a really stupid and confusing change. I'm growing more and more irritated the more I mess with this. And that's a bad sign because that means that I'm not getting more comfortable the more I get to know it, which would be the case if this was just a matter of it being different. I'm sorry, I'm not upset because it's different, I'm upset because it's honestly a step backwards. This is definately going to be a deterrant to my wanting to submit things. It's proving just as annoying as the regular submission process.

The old Sta.sh system was much easier and more pleasant to deal with. :cries:

I have two features i would like to suggest...

1 ~ When i click on my deviation, on the right hand side where it suggests thumbnails of more deviations by me, i think you should be able to select which deviations you want in those thumbnails. Because it always seems to suggest least popular artworks i drew years ago than my latest ones which are a more solid representation of my art style. So a feature enabling us to select which deviations we want displayed under the "More from..." section would be brilliant!

2 ~ I know this is probably asking for too much, but a feature that allows deviants to change their usernames would be so amazing and would probably be praised by many. I know it would be a hard process, but even if it were a once a month special offer with a $50 fee, i would seriously pay for it!

Wait a second !!

There's no Preview button for the artist's description !!

I want to see how the description is going to look like but there's no way I can do that .

The Preview button in the stash only show me the art itself .

And to make things worse ,the description that I already arranged are now only showing words and codes of the icons and emoticons rather than the icon it self . It's showing :bulletred: rather than :bulletred:

Also, I would love it if the default option for offering downloads of a deviation was set to off, especially since the new Stash submit method hides that checkbox under a submenu. I always uncheck it because I don't see the point of offering a download option when I'm already uploading a small version of my photo (usually 800x or 1000px long) in the first place. It's just redundant to me, and I don't like seeing unnecessary buttons on my deviation pages.

It used to be that I could open up different Stash deviations in different tabs, thus allowing me to edit more than one deviation at once. I would love to have this ability reinstated (right now when I open a Stash deviation in a new tab, it just says "Untitled" with a blank page). This is especially useful for me on my stock account, where each description features my stock rules with a short description of the image. But I also use this feature on my regular account too, because I like to put in the descriptions for a whole set of photos, then submit them day by day to spread out my submissions.

Before DA can allow searches in faves/notes/other areas that don't have it but need it, they have to upgrade their search system. They are aware that a lot of people want to see those features though, they aren't ignoring it. [link]
