In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

For Beta Testers: Thumb Grid!

Back in April we launched the new deviantART thumbnails to the Beta Testers. Over the last few months we've received a great deal of feedback from the community. We're always working to ensure that we put out products that are best for our community, and so today we'd like to announce some new options being added to these thumbnails to give you the best browsing experience.

Try the new thumbnail images by upgrading to a Premium Membership and becoming a Beta Tester.

Redraw Button

When deviants submit artwork drawn in deviantART muro, they have the option to post their work as a Redraw, or as the original image. For many users, this was preventing them from viewing the full artwork when they couldn't or didn't want to watch the video. As of today, that problem has been fixed! A "Watch Redraw" button has been added to deviations that have redraw enabled, so that when a user opens a redraw deviation, they will be met with the completed artwork first, and can then choose to watch the redraw.

My Earnings

My Earnings is now accessible via the Shop dropdown menu in the site header. My Earnings lets you view your earnings from your Prints and Premium Content sales, and allows you to receive payments.

deviantART muro

  • Some issues that caused images to be corrupted in deviantART muro were fixed. Fixed by sgrahamUK and $mudimba

  • Writer titles have been restricted to the same parameters as valid deviation titles, so it is consistent. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Hitting tab in the title field didn't take you directly to the main body. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Embedding a "File" deviation produced a broken progress bar. Fixed by $Alisey
  • Muro-created deviations had a blank "embed" code in the share menu. Fixed by $kemayo
  • Undoing a drag and drop from the sidebar reverted the image to a progress bar. Fixed by $Alisey

Your Feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here are some of the suggestions you left for us.
  • Many users mentioned that they don't actively use Channels, and some did not know Channels existed in the first place, though several users mentioned wanting to use it upon hearing about it and how others use it.
  • ~SandFan suggested that slide bars could be incorporated into Channels, so that users could effectively browse several topics from that one page.
  • =FantasyLost suggested that users should be able to rename their Channels, so that they can easier identify each Channel.
  • There were mixed feelings toward the suggestion of the user Gallery displaying the same as Group Galleries do. Several users would rather their Featured folder remain prominent.
  • Users would like polls to remain visible after a Premium Membership expires, even if voting/commenting was disabled. Suggested by ~icytemporalist
  • It would be helpful for a user's correspondence messages to display which folder their Group submission was sent to or requested in. Suggested by ~Blue-Koi and *sakky-attack
  • Users would like to drag folders into other folders, so that folder and subfolder management is more fluid. Suggested by =Aty-S-Behsam and =justalittleknotty
  • It would be nice for the slideshow feature to randomize the order artwork is shown in. Suggested by ~noneli
  • Users would like to be able to see which Group Gallery folder a deviation is in from the deviation page, rather than having to go search for it. Suggested by ~dehydromon
  • Submitting to Groups you are a member of should be part of the basic submission process. Suggested by ~isthisrubble
  • Users would like to have a complete view of their Points transaction history, rather than just two pages. Suggested by =Snow-Body and =Hershey-Star-Lover88

Thank you for the feedback you left about Channels last week, it's greatly appreciated! For the users who do actively use Channels, some track new artwork in certain categories, and others track certain search terms. Some users mentioned that they would like Channels to be more prominent on site, perhaps by being incorporated into the Message Center.
  • ^Elandria mentioned that she uses Channels to see what's been recently submitted to the Resources gallery, and also has channels set to find her icon or username to see what is created using her stock images.
  • =rosaarvensis said she sets several different Channels to view several different categories and specific search terms, rather than having to actively go to each category and search.
  • CrimsonReach mentioned using several Channels to see both new art and popular art on subjects she's interested in, so that the results she wants to see are on one page, rather than having to toggle between newest and popular on the Search page.
In addition, several users mentioned that they would use Channels more actively if they were more prominently displayed on site. With these options in mind, would you be more inclined to use Channels? If you wouldn't use Channels in the ways mentioned here, but still do/want to use Channels, how would you use them? If Channels were made more prominent, where would you like to see them?

no thanks, i like how my gallery looks just like this.
make it optional, if you want to change it. thanks.

It would be helpful for a user's correspondence messages to display which folder their Group submission was sent to or requested
yes thanks! that way it will be easier to withdraw a wrongful submission. sometimes you slip when you're submitting, and you wont even know it until it's declined or asked to be withdrawn.

Suggesting: 1. Hovering mouse over the artists' thumbnails should show a very small description of him/her like which type of artist is he/she and basic infos like number of watcher or page views and number of DDs, non premium or premium or community volunteer or senior (because sometimes it's hard to remember by the signs.) etc.
2. Feature folder in gallery module is not so cool.

Feedback: I'm in love with the new thumbnail update ^^ It's so awesome :) Thanks a lot to you guys :highfive:

I dunno if this has been suggested or not but, for Premium Members who have the option to see the deviations in Big Thumb form to also be able to see if they have already ed the deviation(s).
I find it very time consuming when looking through groups or peoples new submissions to my dA Watch Messages and going over the images I have already ed since I doubt anyone is able to remember each and every single deviant they have ed.
So that's my suggestion, make it visible to see which deviations you have already ed to make it more efficient and less time consuming when browsing new deviations.

Ok, I'm having an issue with writer. I was told if I wanted to be able to center certain things in a lit piece I would have to use writer because it was impossible with the old submit way. But, now I can't indent my paragraphs. :/ Neither in the editing page, nor the actual deviation page is there any way to indent(the piece in question- [link] ).
With stuff submitted the old way you could choose to indent/change font type/size and change the text & background colour. But on pieces submitted via those little formatting boxes do not exist.
How does one indent in Or am I SOL, again! I just want nice neat bits of text that have indented paragraphs and divisionary bits centred where they need to be. (But so far I'm finding I can have one or the other)
And if there isn't a way could one be implemented?

Ah, another Suggestion that popped into my head.

Maybe you guys can make a category for dA Muro Redraw?
I don't want to search through every dA category just to find no redraws and only dA muro drawings as is.

If that made sense xD
But it would be like

deviantART Related > dA Muro > andwhateverrighthere.

Just something I thought of

:bulletwhite: I have another suggestion c:
I’m not aware if this has been suggested before, I’m sure it has, but here goes:

I’d like to have a search area in notes, where we can search for keywords like usernames, or subjects. I’m aware that a lot of people might not use subjects, but if they want to do something like this, I’m sure people will start doing so. In my old account, I had over 1,000 notes and searching through all that was a REAL pain in the butt. (So that’s why I delete/organize my notes occasionally) But if we had this feature, it would be nice c:

There should be another program besides muro that you can mix two colours together to make one. I've searched everywhere on the internet to find a program, and there is no sign of one. Paint and Photoshop probably won't do a good job at it. But it may be a useful program to help deviants create their characters, living things and non-living things. There could be columns of choosing animals, wild animals, pets, humans line art, etc.

And then there would be a download button to save your picture. Sounds helpful?

:bulletorange: Two Suggestions:

1. The DeviantArt Watermark often blocks the view nowadays. There should be options for the opacity and the position.

2. You should be able to set and save the advanced options in the submitting process once and for all. I doesn't make sense to always do the same clicks in the same areas. If it's selecting the license, or to unchecking the downloadable image. We should really be able to save one Option as our personal Default.

I hope it helps

For the thumb grid... I can only fit two columns :cries: Which also left a huge empty spaces in between...

I have some other suggestions to made though. And some popped-in into the Suggestion forum very often.

:bulletblue: Ability to separate group deviations and deviants deviation in our Message center.

:bulletgreen: Ability to sort out our deviant list in a quicker way.

:bulletyellow: Instead of having long list of Notes (from receive and giving replies), why not we have that them in a single Notes like what we have in Groups?

Thanks. :)

We also need the ability to subscribe to certain folders within a group. For instance, I might be in an anime group but have no interest in Naruto-themed fan art, so I would uncheck that box so I would receive no Naruto-themed art from that group. Or maybe the group, while it's a great group, has a mature folder. Rather than fill my inbox up with mature deviations or blanked out images, I could unsubscribe from that folder.
CATSr2 Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012
I love that idea and I think this is one of the things that should be in the next HQ Blog. I also think that should be an ability for when you're following individual artists as well. Because I sometimes only follow an artist because he/she makes pony art or tutorials or whatever else. And I'm not saying that their other work sucks, I'm just saying that I'm only interested in certain things that they make. This would help me a grate deal because I'm subscribed to so many artists/groups that I get over a few thousand some deviations in one day. This ability would unclutter my inbox greatly.

I would very much appreciate a feature that lets users organize their favourites folder.
A shuffle function would be most useful.
ikazon Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012   Writer
Hey there! You can already rearrange your favourites thumbs by dragging and moving them around. As far as randomization goes, you can set the Favourites widget on your page to display your favourites at random, as well. Hope that helps. :]

It was suggested to be able to see what folder in a group a deviation is in without having to go looking but I was wondering if, instead, a search function could be added to group galleries. Granted the folder thing would be helpful but when you've got a completely full folder it's a pain to try and find one the deviation you're looking for.

For example, I'm currently running polls to pick the best of what's been submitted to #BlacknWhite-Artists and it takes me over an hour sometimes to track down the winning work(s) so I can copy them into the Featured folder. Having the ability to search through the gallery like you can on individual deviants' galleries would be fantastic.

Anyone having this issue with writer? I paste what I have into the thing and I want to submit an RP log, though I can't get it to submit it as a literature deviation. It'll only submit it as a journal entry and the only options that come up in categories are Frequently User(Journals<Personal), My Journal, and Journals. I try starting a new draft but it still only works as a journal entry.
ikazon Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012   Writer
Hey there! The Frequently Used section will only pull up categories you very regularly submit to, and because all of your written deviations are submitted to Fan Fiction, it won't pull Literature up in the frequently used area. You can still select Literature manually, though. Scroll down on the category selection area, Literature is near the bottom of the main category list. :]
Yoshinx Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012  Student Digital Artist
The problem is none of these options come up that would come up for any deviation whether its literature or art. For the piece I'm trying to submit through writer only 3 options will come up in categories and they're all journal based. Its treating this one piece only as a journal entry even though it isn't.
ikazon Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012   Writer

Is it just me, or does the left-right scrollbar not appear when fullviewing deviations larger that the screen?
CATSr2 Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012
You should at least state what browser your using. I use Google Chrome on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I have had no problems like that before. Maybe it is certain deviations. Could you link me to an example where the left and right scroll bar has disappeared? Maybe it has something to do with the resolution not being large enough for it to appear.
Juandfr Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
My apologies. I am using the latest version of Firefox.
I experience the problem with every deviation which exceeds the screen width.

I experienced it there too. But here's one where that doesn't happen to me: [link]
Juandfr Featured By Owner Aug 21, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Hm, you're right! Could the difference be that the second image was only wider than the screen, while the first was both wider and taller?
CATSr2 Featured By Owner Aug 22, 2012
Perhaps. Thinking back on it, I have indeed run into images where the left right scroll bar is needed, but not there. So hopefully staff sees this conversation and fixes it.

I don't know if this is a bug or just me, but when I look at my page I notice that, although my favorites display is set to "random", it almost always shows four deviations that I favorited at about the same time - I can tell because I usually go through and favorite a few things when I watch a new show/read something new that I like. So, there tends to be clumps of the same subject, and these clumps always show up together on the "random" widget. They are also almost always the ones I favorited more recently - I never see the stuff I faved in, oh, 2004, for instance. I don't have very many favorites, but it sure would be nice to see more of a random selection on my main page!

"•There were mixed feelings toward the suggestion of the user Gallery displaying the same as Group Galleries do. Several users would rather their Featured folder remain prominent."
I like the concept of a user's featured folder echoing that of a Group Gallery. However, I wouldn't want it to be default.
You could make it a premium 'if you want it you'll have to click this option to make it' account perk. Like with being able to change our account name. (Which, mind you, I LOVE, and moreso that only premium members can do. It'd cause waaayyy too much chaos if everyone, including free users could do that. )
I think you should give this one some serious thought.

"•Users would like polls to remain visible after a Premium Membership expires, even if voting/commenting was disabled. "
That would be nice. Say, like, voting for a poll of mine ended on Monday. And on Wednesday I didn't have enough money/points to get another premium account yet and POOF! I went back to being a free user. I'd want to still be able to see that poll results, as well as the rest of my watchers/visitors. Even if all I could do was either look at it or remove it from my home page, I'd still like that I could keep it up if I wanted.

"•Users would like to drag folders into other folders, so that folder and subfolder management is more fluid. "
OMG! YES PLEASE!
I took full advantage of the Premium Membership day when it happened and made myself some new subfolders. However, if I made a subfolder then, later, realized it should be in a different location, I had to go, delete that subfolder I made, go to a new location, made a new subfolder, then move those files that had been in the other subfolder. It was a waste of time.
It may not be the biggest, most important detail for some people, and not one used every single day by every single person that uses this site, but hey, if we can have drag and drop favorites, why not the same for subfolders moved from one location or another?

"•Users would like to have a complete view of their Points transaction history, rather than just two pages. Suggested by =Snow-Body and =Hershey-Star-Lover88"
I don't know why this would be important, but hey, to each their own. Nothing wrong with that.
Maybe there could be the main (only a few names / points) page for points transaction, then you can click a link to go to another page that would list a much more complete... well, list for people we've had points transactions with.
Just a thought!
xhersheystarlover Featured By Owner Aug 21, 2012
Hi! I do a lot of point transactions, and sometimes when people say I haven't sent the points, I'd like from the beginning of time so that I can screenshot it and give them proof c:
abeamofsunlight Featured By Owner Aug 21, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
~*nods*~ I can see where that would be helpful. Though I don't understand.
If a person goes to that points page, they see someone is offering points for llamas. The click the point-giving person's name. The window comes up asking if they want to confirm it. Yes.
New little window pops up saying transaction done.
The new point will show up when you hold your cursor over the shop button up there at the top of the page.
I'd think it'd be a dishonest person to note you and say 'I didn't get my point from you'. If they got the transaction message window and it was confirmed, they automatically get the point. If you don't have the points to spare, the little transaction window will say 'problems securing points' or something.
