Testing A New Thumbnail Grid

Tue Mar 29, 2016, 4:00 PM by danlev:icondanlev:

In June, we announced forthcoming changes to the display of our thumbnail grid.  Beta Testing followed in September, and after much optimization, bug fixes, and improvements to load times, we're proud to announce that, as of today, we've begun testing the new thumbnail grid to the site-at-large.

The new grid is being tested to a segment of deviants — both logged in and logged out. Currently, there is no way to opt-in (or out) of the test, but if everything goes as planned, it will soon be rolled out to the rest of the site.

Before and after concept designs on the desktop site

What's Improved

  • Bigger thumbnails and a new grid system allow more emphasis to be placed on art.

  • The old grid leaves uneven or irregular gaps between images, while our new grid maximizes screen space to create a wall of beautifully displayed deviations.

  • You can now favourite a deviation by tapping the star on the top right corner of the thumbnail. (New!)

  • The new thumbnail grid is optimized for bandwidth. Images will use slightly more bandwidth, but less bandwidth will be used across multiple pages.

  • Thumbnails are optimized for retina and high-resolution screens.

  • We put special care into the look of non-standard image types, such as literature, pixel art, and emoticons to ensure that all kinds of art are featured respectfully and beautifully.

For full details about what we improved, you can read the original announcement.

Not seeing titles is stupid. Some images zooming out weirdly is beyond stupid. Not being able to rearrange/edit gallery thumbs without having to press an "edit" button is stupid. This update is stupid, revert it back please.

I don't mind the larger thumbnails, but I feel I need to say how much I don't like the rest of it. The tooltip that used to show up on hover over a deviation that told you the title, the category, and when it was posted is gone, and considering it shows up no where else in this new grid format, this is a huge loss, as I do not want to have to click through each deviation just to see that information. If even the tooltip was restored, the rest of it wouldn't be nearly as bad, but the lack of the title or category or how old the deviation is, those are considerably worse things with this new layout. Also the lack of any "page" concept makes it hard to see how far you've browsed through either the main page or a search. Combined with now no longer being able to utilize the "click through" option, I feel as though this new layout is really, really bad in comparison to how it was before.

EDIT: It seems as though the "click through" functionality was actually re-added, so that is less of a concern. Still doesn't change my opinion on the rest of the layout, though.

WHAT THE HELL????  This is horrible, can't even see the title, how old it is or no information what so ever??????  I'm so fed up with all these changes that are taking away useful information, now its just a cluttered page with images.   DA is going downhill so fast.  I'm sick of this!!!!!  Give me the old grid back with information below the images.

why...would you...take it upon yourselves to fix something that is not broken and then not let us have any sort of customization for how we want the thumbnails to look like.

I've noticed that a couple of the thumbnails in my own gallery folders are now broken. They were visible for quite a few years and I have not changed anything. They seemed to have broken recently, so I'm not sure if this is a bug related to the new thumbnail changes or not. Most of them are intact, it's just two that I have noticed that are now broken. I'm not sure if there is a way to fix it on my end.

I really like the layout but there is a bug that a lot of deviations appear duplicated
Problemdagrid by HappyGirl06

Also, I think it would be useful to add a quick "report" button straight from the browse page, so you don't have to actually go into the deviation to report, giving the views and taking more time..

Various innovations are being rolled out in devArt but the biggest improvement for me would be to do something about the endless "Free Points" spam. If you visit the "Newest" view of the main page then there is "Free Points" spam there all the time every weekend. Today user thompson923841 has already posted over 5,000 spams in 24 hours and is still spamming, despite being reported by numerous real members.

The spamming could easily be brought under control if devArt introduced a limit on the number of submissions a member could make a day. We already have limits for groups, so the technology is already in place. A limit of 50 posts per day for non-paying members would be fine for real people and would make spamming pointless compared with the 5,000 spams being sent now.

This grid system was rolled out to me the other day on April 9th and I honestly thought my browser was having issues loading the layout in the way I'm used to. I dunno what that little middle square option is called where you can toggle your preferred view of browsing thumbnails among the three options listed, but when this new grid system was rolled out that middle square wasn't given as an option to me. Only the other two options remained. I much prefer that middle option to view thumbnails when browsing. The new grid system tended to load thumbnails a lot slower than it usually takes to and I tend to enjoy scrolling down the page quickly until I find a picture that catches my eye. Having to wait longer for one page of thumbnails to load is rather inconvenient, especially when it still does it when viewing 120 thumbnails at once with Core Membership. Also another inconvenience about the new layout involved lots of broken thumbnails and only certain thumbnails loading. The broken thumbnails were blank and had little question marks in the middle of the square/rectangle. Constantly had to page refresh and even then the same thing kept happening. I also didn't like that anything involving Literature didn't have any preview of the text like uploads of that nature currently do. It just said "Literature" written in black script text on the top of the thumbnail and that was it. Would have no idea what the literature even is from the thumbnail or what type it was.

I sent in a Help Desk Ticket the other day asking about this and asking if dA was in the midst of fiddling around with a new layout and whether they were in the process of fine-tuning it, and then I mistakenly thought it was actually on my end since the layout returned back to normal a few hours later. The administrator who handled my Ticket told me it was actually an experiment of a layout change being circulated around to different random members and I suppose I was one of them, and he pointed me in this journal's direction encouraging me to leave feedback on my experience with it. So here I am, and that's my two cents.

I hope if this new layout is in fact inevitable, that fixes will be made because my experience with it was hardly ideal at all.

Thank you for saying that. I was afraid they were going to 'gyp the lit community here since the thumbnails don't even show what happens with our custom author tags. :( Considering that the journal says our works are treated "respectfully", I'm very disheartened to hear that a big blank box with the word "literature" stamped across it was all that showed. Do you happen to know if this was all lit or just on pieces that were marked mature? If you happened to click on any of them, that is.

It makes me sad because it's not like we don't give back to the community as a whole. Lit usually has the largest - or one of the largest - CV turnouts at any given time (right now there's LiliWrites, TheMaidenInBlack, brennenxr), currently tied only with general photography. I've never seen any group so eclectic and diverse and yet so willing to help each other. Sure we get our fair share of generic commenters, but most people who comment on literature at least have some idea of what the story was about. We're not generally getting a "great job!" comment (unless it received a DD feature), and because we receive more depth in our feedback, we generally give more depth in feedback as well, and not just to written works. -sigh-

This is happening without the beta grid version as well. Just wanted to let you know in case you continue to experience that issue.

I'm very sad to hear that this is the type of thing that's coming. If I can't see the lit in a thumbnail, I'll have to do that full view thing that navigating any of the journal sections of the site forces on me. :(

I believe the literature part pertained to all types of literature submissions, mature or not, and I think regular journal submissions were classified under that roof as well. I remember clicking on one and it looked like a journal submission to me, so I'm assuming that's what they've been experimenting with. It may be in beta mode but if that's the way their new system is indeed proposed to work, color me perplexed.

Usually you can hover your cursor over a submission like a journal for instance and you can see the text slowly scroll down to get a bit of a preview, but not so with the proposed new system. Just said "Literature" in bold black script at the top, and that was it.

Ah, I see. A few times that's happened to me since I've posted my feedback here. It seems they may be limiting our preferred viewing options to two as opposed to the current three, if the beta system is enacted in its current form. I'm just not very pleased with the proposed direction this site wants to take general browsing and layout format in from the looks of things as we've both seen them.

So, on literature, from what I can see on the screenshot, it shows a bitty lit bar. A lot of us who write regularly have our own custom lit bar, the bit that shows up on the left. How exactly is my lit bar, which was created for vertical appearance as per the requirements of 20x125, going to show? Both this screenshot and the original screenshot so a generic lit bar. And in both of the "before" screens, those lit pieces have only the generic tag. I'd like to see a screen of the test with a custom "Literature Author Tag", please.

- "Thumbnails are optimized for retina and high-resolution screens."
So I guess that means tough luck for everyone not using those screens or who just prefer smaller thumbnails, right? Please, please for once offer the option for us to still use smaller thumbnails. I know you guys usually hate giving us more options, but those big preview images are just an eyesore, at least for me.

Most importantly though, don't force endless scrolling on us. Please. That's just incredibly annoying.

You can actually set that in your settings>browsing section of your account. Under "Paging" there's a drop down, so you can choose "scroll through" or "click through". I have mine set to "click through"; the only place that doesn't work is on DDs if I click "show more".

Can we at least get an option to have the old grid? I hate the endless scroll and the thumbnails are just way too big for my liking. We should be allowed to have an option to have the new or old one. Specially if it makes people's computers lag out. (which will probably happen)

I Agree With This The option to have the new grid and classic grid would be easy to implement, if they just add the new one as a new feature rather than overriding the old one.

The new one seriously sucks, because seeing all the info at a glance is beyond useful for looking at what gets popular and figuring out your target audience, as well as basic things like being able to see the titles.

The Fall of the Wordpress Stats Page"This has just started showing up as the default page when I check my stats.
This page seems to be the latest phase of uselessness in the vastly inferior New Stats format. If I am looking to quickly check my stats *for the current day* I do not need to know which days and times get the most post views. I also do not need a calendar grid showing every day that I posted in the past year.
I also notice that the link to the old stats page has completely disappeared from every Stats page, along with the link to the Forums/Support where we might be able to express our views of this change. Hmm.
(And yes, I have bookmarked the link on the admin page that still goes to the old stats page.)
Staff, please don't bother to post the corporate-speak about how these changes enhance the cross-platform experience, because they don't. At least, for the *majority* of us who use laptops/desktops to work on our blogs.
At the very least, please make the "Days" page the
I left Wordpress for the most part (going back only occassionally), due to them removing their easy and clear information.
This kinda trend has got to stop, and Deviantart was supposed to be unique and deviant from these trends.

It feels like the staff are destroying something beautiful.
The two options really need to be there if they want to actually improve the site and not just change it for change's sake.

As per usual, everyone whom dislikes it, comments, and those that dont mind it remain silent. Leading all the haters to feel they are in the majority, and dA just ignores everyone.

Personally, I like the new grid as I'm well aware the world is 'going mobile' while attention spans are shrinking. And so, if we dont make it more mobile/gnat friendly (bigger pictures, simpler menu's) dA will become obsolete. So I commend you for your forward thinking and I look forward to a bright future. :)

It does look like an improvement over the decategorized option, but the square thumbnails option is gone. What happened to it? Will it come back?

I have a small monitor so neither of the other options work well for me. I also liked being able to see the titles of deviations before i clicked them, which was easier on my bandwidth when they were text and not mouseovers.

I admit that this looks really good. I really like how it takes up all the space and how the literature deviations are getting much more text and how the pixel art looks [no more of that gross blur].

...but I wish the display was the other way around.. like it would have the overlay with the information by default and when you hover over it you can see the deviation without the captions. :'B [or atleast an option in settings to do so?]

I was also just thinking "I wish I could close the side bar 'cause it's so ugly with the thumbs", and just realized there was a button for that hahaha. I wish the 'hide search' button followed down the page when I scroll down though. 'Cause it can take a long time for my page to scroll alllllllll the way back up.

A two column 'full view' would be nice too =^w^= I really like the layout of it. It has the deviation, the ability to fav/place in a collection, the artist description, and the ability to comment. I has everything I need, it's just kinda inefficient with space. [Or maybe instead of 2 columns, on the right it could show the first few lines of the recent comments?]

It might be possible that the problem could be with any cookies that Deviantart may have placed on your machine. If you could find the specific cookie for the Deviantart site, that may help.

Please note that I am not an expert at what happened, all I know is that I got the old thumbnails back after doing a clean sweep on my internet browsers. The cookie could be the most likely culprit.

Sooo...even less motivation for users to actually click on a Deviation and comment, right? "Fav-And-Run" has been a problem since I joined here 11 years ago. This does not help. :(

I still very much dislike that the number of comments isn't visible at first glance. As pointed out last time, I prefer to comment on Deviations with little comments. If I can no longer see it easily, it will be more difficult for me to support invisible artists.
Any chances of being able to sort your message center inbox/browse by number of comments...? No? :c That would be super cool, to be honest.
I also still dislike the endless scrolling. It's slow, it lags, is chaotic and...blergh.

All together, I can't say much about this. Just...I don't browse much anymore, maybe once a week. I basically only use my message center and nothing else. No clue what will happen if the message center changes too...

The concern over comments is one we share, and many projects that will release soon are designed to dramatically increase comment rates.

That aside, the star on the thumbnail is no different than being able to drag a thumbnail into a collection to Fave. So it's no easier or harder.

The star in the top right is a part of a larger initiative to help unify our mobile web, web, app products so they feel consistent as best as possible.

I will state again that deviations with few or No comments are a big focus, and many of the coming changes will help to drive the community toward commenting on deviants that need nurturing. Just because this specific project doesn't do that, because it wasn't meant to, doesn't mean we aren't on the same page about this. The-Super-Salad

Cheers,

Given the new, massive images, calling them "thumbnails" no longer seems to be appropriate. How about calling them "Ham-Fisted" which would seem to fit better, given the size and the irregular layout.

Just like the 'Status Updates' that were forced on us, it seems more that it is for the pleasure of some developer that has an extreme Social Media Fetish...
