Username Changes Now Available

Wed May 16, 2012, 3:18 PM

DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.

For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.

How It Works

Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership.  (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants.)  Once changed, your previous username will redirect to your new profile. You can only change your username once per six months and you are not able to change back to the original username.

What Happens When You Change Usernames

Once you change your username, you will be logged out and asked to login again using your new username and existing password.

Everything will be transferred
Your deviations (artwork), favourites, watchers, messages, stats, settings, etc., will all be transferred to the new username. The only thing that doesn’t transfer are the places where people mentioned your old username in comments, journals, artwork descriptions, etc.  However, those links will redirect to your new username.

Your watchers will be notified
Your watchers will get a notification in their Message Center informing them that you have changed your username. Also, "(formerly [username])" will display on your new username’s Profile Page and next to your username for one month. This notice will always display (even after the one month) if someone visits your old profile and is redirected to the new one.

Further Details

  • Username changes are available to anyone with an active Premium Membership -- whether you bought it yourself or it was gifted to you.
  • You cannot change your username to one that is taken even if you are the owner of both. You cannot claim a deactivated account.
  • You can simply change the capitalization of your username.
  • No one will be able to claim your old username.
  • Group username changes are not supported at this time.

Username changes have been one of our most requested features, and we're excited to offer this option. We understand the desire to adapt as you progress as an artist and it is our hope that username changes will facilitate this growth. As always, we're eager to hear your feedback!

Want to change your username? Upgrade to a Premium Membership.

I have a question: It's been six months since my last username change ( I strongly dislike the one I chose because I did not think it through) and it won't let me change my name. How long does it take until the system opens it back up? :-? (Confused)

Why aren't people, even the previous users of a username, allowed to reclaim a previous username?

Also I don't like my old username, but with a premium membership, no way. Fix your technical process and make the change free now.

Why won't I change my username for free ? You need to make it free because I'm under 18 and still without a credit card or bill.

Why you cannot change the username to the one you had before? o.o I mean... It won't be disponible to other people so.. Why not allow that the user can recover old usernames?

Hello! I just have a question...so let's say I change my username, then my core expires. Would I be able to get another core membership after it expired? The only reason I'm asking is beacause somewhere in this journal it said: "core membership purchases cannot be refunded once you have changed your username" what does that mean, exactly?

Thanks for for any help. :)

Basically what that clause is saying is that you can't get a refund for your Core anymore. You're more than welcome to renew it once or even before it expires, but if you decide you don't want Core anymore and want your money back, you can't get it back. Does that make sense? ^^

Hi danlev ! Question: I have two deviantart accounts, let's call them A and B. I wish to upgrade account A to change its name to B, and I understand that currently I cannot do so because B is already taken (even if just by me). Now, if I upgrade B's membership and then change that account to C so that I now have A and C... would I be able to now change A to B?

(Basically, I'm wondering if changing B to C allows me to "work around" the fact that I can't just deactivate B to free it up. I suspect it's not doable, because "you don't lose your own old account", but I just want to make doubly sure. :) Did I just answer my own question? :P)

Thanks!

The system with "You need Points to change your Username" was better in my opinion.

So once you change your name, it's a permanent change, even when the membership runs out, right?

In my humble, newbie, opinion, new members should have the opportunity to change their username ONCE at NO COST if done with the first 24 hours or before any uploads.

As a new member, I have nothing uploaded and no one watching me, so not a whole lot to transition, ya know. I don't there is much, if any, cost to you for the change.

Also, as a new member, it was only after joining and getting to know other's names and getting a feel for the place that I realized my username did not fit my purpose here.

My choices are to either pay to change my username or rejoin using a different email account, as I image you would not allow me to rejoin using the same email. As I'm a starving artist I'm tempted to do the latter, which is a real bummer because I put a lot into creating my profile Likes/Favorites and spent some time carefully choosing who to watch and figure that whole thing out. I guess I can just write it all down and do it over again, but that's a pain.

Makes me wonder if it's all worth it. I can still appreciate the art without joining the community and there are plenty of other places to show off my work and join a community of like minded souls.

Honestly, deviantart would make more money charging a single fee to change usernames than expecting people to go and pay for a full membership.

It's a poor business strategy and a poor expectancy, they're getting a lot less than they could.
People don't buy core membership because it just isn't worth it to spend that much god damn money so that they can do one thing. It's idiotic for you guys to think that they would.

I think this is a pretty good strategy. It's only 14 bucks for a permanent name change (which should only be a 1-2 time thing in your life as an artist) as well as 3 months of premium memership.  They might even hook some people into extending the membership

I think you should be able to change your username once for free, and any more times you want to change it for a fee.
Not just for core members.
