We're proud to announce a new integration with Verold, a platform for artists to upload their 3D work and publish it to the Web. Verold's viewer is now integrated into deviantART Journals, giving you the ability to showcase your 3D art.

Verold offers artists a number of tools to collaborate in real time on the Web, add textures, and set up 3D scenes. Verold also supports limited animation, letting you bring your character or scene to life.

Verold's viewer works on most modern browsers without any plugins, as well as on modern mobile phones.

Uploading Your 3D Art To Verold

To get started, sign up for a Verold account and then upload your models and textures.

How To Embed Verold In Your Journal

After uploading your work to Verold, sharing it on deviantART is easy. Simply copy and paste a Verold URL (e.g.: studio.verold.com/projects/53003e790bc9ea02000002ab) into your deviantART Journal and it will automatically embed the Verold viewer to let your audience interact with your 3D creations.

Just a heads-up, the Verold viewer fails to start if you have the HTTPS Everywhere extension installed in your browser. I did a bit of investigation when I could get the viewer to start - turned out that connection to googleapis.com was failing. Turning that particular rule off in HTTPS Everywhere, or disabling the extension, will fix the problem. I'm using Chrome on Mac OSX 10.9, but I suspect this will also occur for other browsers and OSes where HTTPS Everywhere can run.

Will there be support for other embedded 3D providers such as p3d?

At first, I thought this was going to be something along the lines of what's being done with motion books, i.e. embedded viewer in the stead of the deviation itself.
I don't mind this update, but I hope that DA gets their own 3d viewer, at least when IE starts to adequately support webgl.

Yes, exactly! 3D on the web is something that has been promised for decades. We now have the perfect storm of technology (both standards like WebGL, but also the hardware is performant enough). You will see a lot more 3D on the web in the coming months, not only the simple embeds like what you're seeing from Verold and Sketchfab here, but also much more seamless integrations of 3D and web technologies. It can be frustrating to see WebGL roll out slowly to some devices, but also very exciting to see the promise of what future experiences can be!

I've been waiting for years for this! Granted it's easy enough to put others in your journal, but this saves a lot of time. Can't wait to try it out :)

Does this allow us to add 3D models as deviations? Because I think I'll still stick with Sketchfab till then...

The integrations for both Sketchfab and Verold are in Journals, not deviations (yet). To each his own, there are pros and cons of each platform.

Alternatively to what others have said, if you're using IE, you can find a plugin on the net that enables webgl functionality in your browser.

I installed Firefox yesterday and Verold worked very well and I didn't have to mess with anything.
It's well worth the effort if you do 3D modelling or if you are interested in looking at other people's work  - both of the 3D features added to DA recently are quite impressive.

I don't do 3-d modeling myself, i don't mind looking at others, but i wish these things would be fixed coming in, not broken.

Its just another feature I wont be able to partake of.

It's not really that it's broken, it's because it needs things to make it run which aren't available in all browsers.
As I said I'm using Firefox for it - I've used Internet Explorer up to now but I am also finding that in Firefox my DA pages load a lot quicker than they were, so there may be some other benefits in trying Firefox.

meh im not against chrome but I don't really like its layout either. and I don't wanna use different web browsers for everything I do online. I think DA should suck it up and fix things to fit all their members web browsers

Verold depends on WebGL, the open standard for computer graphics on the web.

You'll need to be on Chrome or Firefox, or if using Safari then you can enable WebGL by following the instructions provided in the viewer.

It's amazing how far web browsers have come in the last few years. That we can deliver graphics performance like this in native Javascript. Mozilla and Google are definitely paving the way here, but Microsoft is catching up and Apple will get there eventually.

More integrations! :#1:

With other websites that are getting better integration on deviantART, it may be interesting to have new profile tabs or gallery folders possible. Say users get a "Verold" and/or "SketchFab" folder/tab that shows their posts on those websites. Though this may require those services to provide decent APIs.

Quite useful as a means of showcasing your 3D models, if you make 3D models.
If you don't then they'll be no use at all, other than to look at other people's showcased models.
